When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like "Avatar"? - Avatar - io9
-
This is the essence of the white guilt fantasy, laid bare. It's not just a wish to be absolved of the crimes whites have committed against people of color; it's not just a wish to join the side of moral justice in battle. It's a wish to lead people of color from the inside rather than from the (oppressive, white) outside.
-
When whites fantasize about becoming other races, it's only fun if they can blithely ignore the fundamental experience of being an oppressed racial group. Which is that you are oppressed, and nobody will let you be a leader of anything.

Continuing the Debate on “Avatar” and “The Blind Side”

And that’s because of the cultural guilt that I’m dealing with. I usually don’t feel guilty for being white, but I constantly feel guilty for being human.
“Avatar” Puts an Interesting Twist on an Old, Old Tale

when art assumes we were “better before,” it often becomes primitivist. In its quest for a life that’s more “authentic” or “connected,” it fetishizes “primitive” people who live outside the Western majority.
-
The prejudice in those stories is insidious because it’s dressed up as praise. It’s just as dehumanizing to say “all Native Americans are wise” as it is to say “all Native Americans are stupid,” because both statements treat a group of complex people like a uniform object.

Therefore the song deals with the question on the topic of the choice and the position. It ends with the wish to never have to choose a camp.
'Leidenstadt' is an imaginary city whose name is composed of the German words : 'Die Leiden' (the suffering) and 'Die Stadt' (the city).

Not right before because it only gave me the tools to judge the literal success of the adaptation and not the sense of it. Kind of how Stephen King ragged on Stanley Kubrick’s masterful The Shining because he swayed so far from the plot points in the book, so when he did his own literal made-for-TV adaptation and it blew he went on record saying “ah, i get it. Making a movie is different than writing a book. My bad, Stanley Kubrick actually did know how to direct a film. I’m a dickcheese.”

I think this is supposed to create a feeling of wonder, and I think the actors are supposed to be having fun. Sometimes it works, but mostly, I picture Lloyd standing off-camera in a track coach’s uniform, blowing on her whistle and screaming, “Have more fun, you bastards! Have more FUN!”

Nolan is making an argument about the balance of good and evil in the world, and the value of stories that may not be true. Bruce Wayne is comforted because he believes Rachel loved him, so what’s the harm in keeping up the lie? We as a society feel better if we believe our heroes are noble, so why not let us believe it sometimes?

“Pretentious” is tougher to counter. Professional critics, at least good ones, are by definition pretentious, since they value their opinions enough to proclaim them loudly.
-
Note to readers: You blunt the force of your attack when you write to an author to say, “No one cares what you think” — because, uh, at least one person does.

I'm not going to get in the middle of this maelstrom, since sadly, I'm such a cultural slacker that I haven't seen the movie yet. But I feel a pang of sympathy for Edelstein, who notes that the Batman fanboys seem to want to have it both ways--calling him a snob for taking the movie seriously, then mocking his pretentiousness for offering more than a "Wow!" as a critical response.
-
There is superb writing in blogs and discussion groups ... but there are also thousands of semi-literate tirades that actually reinforce the Hollywood status quo, that say: 'If you do not like "The Dark Knight,'" you should be fired because you do not speak for the people.' Well, the people don't need to be spoken for. And a critic's job is not only to steer you to movies you might not have heard of or that died at the box-office. It's also to bring a different, much-needed perspective on blockbusters like 'The Dark Knight.' "
In medias res - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In medias res (“into mid-affairs”) and medias in res (“into the midst of affairs”) are Latin phrases denoting the literary and artistic narrative technique wherein the relation of a story begins either at the mid-point or at the conclusion, not at the beginning (cf. ab ovo, ab initio), establishing setting, character, and conflict via flashback and expository conversations relating the pertinent past.

I savor those "what you didn't know" moments, because they suggest that the story is in control. There's nothing more boring than a predictable plot, and I enjoy myself more when I don't know what to expect.

Iron Man: Half Gold, Half Lead
-
For a superhero flick, it’s extremely aware that violence has consequences.
-
He flies away while they decide what to do, but he explicitly tells them to have their way with him. Will they? It’s a disturbing thought, and it reminds us that even the “villains” in war are human beings who are capable of suffering, and that the “heroes” and “victims,” when given the chance, can become brutes. Will the beleaguered villagers go medieval on their tormentor? We’re left wondering.

Trailer Scaler: Watchmen

So this whole party line that the Serious Comic Book Movie is original and fresh and a Product of Our Complicated Times is pretty weak. I would instead submit to you that the Serious Comic Book Movie is in fact A Well-Worn Hollywood Marketing Cliche, right up there with The Horror Movie That Really, Really Pushes The Envelope, The Whimsical Tragicomedy That Serves As A Vehicle for A Comedian To Break Into Serious Drama, and The Movie Oriented Towards Female Audiences That Shocks Everybody Yet Again By Doing Well At the Box Office.
Movie Review - Watchmen - For a Cold War, a Blue Superhero (and Friends) - NYTimes.com

By the way, can we please have a moratorium on the use of this song in movies? Yes, I too have heard there was a secret chord that David played, and blah blah blah, but I don’t want to hear it again. Do you?
-
But brutality is not merely part of Mr. Snyder’s repertory of effects; it is more like a cause, a principle, an ideology. And his commitment to violence brings into relief the shallow nihilism that has always lurked beneath the intellectual pretensions of “Watchmen.” The only action that makes sense in this world — the only sure basis for ethics or politics, the only expression of love or loyalty or conviction — is killing. And the dramatic conflict revealed, at long last, in the film’s climactic arguments is between a wholesale, idealistic approach to mass death and one that is more cynical and individualistic.

“Watchmen:” Thoughts From an Unfamiliar Viewer
-
“They’ll never know the difference between eating a gourmet meal,” he said, “and just being shown a movie of one.”

I just don’t have experience reading comics, and it really is an acquired skill, like reading a play. I feel adrift in the movement between panels, unsure where to put my eyes, discombobulated by the interplay of text balloons and static images. Comics aren’t a form I understand, and so I rely on adaptations to help me enter their stories. It’s not about having disdain for the original material, but about wanting the material to arrive in a medium that’s already familiar, whose language already makes sense.

Keratosis pilaris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
-
Many KP bumps contain an ingrown hair that has coiled. This is a result of the keratinized skin's "capping off" the hair follicle, preventing the hair from exiting. The hair grows encapsulated inside the follicle. The hair's removal can lead to scarring.
Alpha Mom™ - Baby, Pregnancy, Toddler, Motherhood, Baby Names, and Baby Product Reviews

This sort of reaction is even more common among first-timers, as your hair can be very coarse and deep-rooted, so forcibly yanking it out essentially tells your skin that you've been injured, and it reacts accordingly by releasing histamines.
-
If you do get the bumps again (either at-home or salon), the most important thing is to NOT POKE AT THEM. No scratching or squeezing -- they aren't pimples or whiteheads, but just your skin's weird way of defending itself. Spend as much time naked as you can (BOOM CHICKA BOOM), as even your clothes can rub the rash and spread it.

Barack Obama's 'Entourage' Obsession - Starpulse Entertainment News

I remember one time I emailed him (Obama) because the call was scheduled for the last 15 minutes of Entourage and I said, 'Just be late and we can just watch Entourage and still get on and do the call.' And it worked. We got to see Entourage."
Obama goes gloves off, head-on - Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 | 2 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun

Obama told the Sun his favorite character is Omar, a stick-up artist who steals from drug dealers and then gives the loot to poor people in the neighborhood.
“That’s not an endorsement. He’s not my favorite person, but he’s a fascinating character.”
