Glenda's A.T. Information and more...: iPhones and iPodTouch

"iPhones and iPodTouch

We all see those great advertisements about iPhone “apps”, what you might not realize though is how wonderful the iPhone can be for people with various challenges. Much of the attractiveness of the iPhone and iPod apps, available for children and teens who benefit from options in communication and organization, is that everyone is so familiar with them or willing to learn more about them due to their awesome appeal, popularity and tech culture status. They are the in thing!

What you may not know is that parents, Speech and Language Specialist and teachers have begun developing programs specifically for the disabled population. Some may not be designed for the disabled but have become a great tool for them anyway!

This is not a complete listing, I am sure, but it is a beginning. I will try to keep it up-dated. Please let me know if I miss something!

Remember also that you do not have to have a phone as part of your system as you can download, purchase and use the same (most anyway) “apps” by using an iPodTouch. "

Teaching and technology ~ presentations and resources for educators

"Presentation and workshop documents

During the last six or so years I have created a number of 'how-to' documents and presentations for a variety of web based and related technologies. They are available from the various workshop web pages however I thought it might prove helpful to link to all the documents from a single page. Some of my workshop participants have referred to these documents as 'cheat sheets'."

Make any text into a computer-generated audio file with Snow Leopard » Moving at the Speed of Creativity

"For any student having trouble reading material on a screen, text-to-speech technologies can be wonderful. My March 2008 post, “Converting text to and from speech for accessibility and convenience” addressed some of the software options available today for text to speech functionality. Of those, “CLiCk, Speak” is probably the main one to check out. It’s cross-platform, works in the FireFox browser as a plug-in, and is free.

In addition to those text-to-speech options, the latest version of the Macintosh operating system (OS 10.6 “Snow Leopard”) includes the built-in ability to convert highlighted text in many applications into an audio file. Here is an example of a file I created while writing this post, of this paragraph."

melaniemcbride.net » The hidden curriculum of 21st century learning

"The hidden curriculum of 21st century learning
July 3rd, 2009 | Category: Education, Equity, Literacies | 34 comments

I was recently solicited for my thoughts on the key priorities for 21st Century learning and surprised myself – and my client – with the answer. Prior to this query, I might have rhymed off the usual classroom2.0 mantra: blogging, social media, virtual worlds, mobile technology and, of course, multi-tasking. But the more I reflected on my teaching and client experiences these past few years, the more I realised these priorities aren’t especially technical at all.

This led me to the conclusion that few 21st century learning priorities are less about technical skills, tools, services, software or hardware but far more social, cultural and behavioural as they relate to states of being, thinking, feeling and acting with technology."
