New York Yankees Captains

To date, there have been 11 captains of the famous New York Yankees baseball franchise. The story begins with Hal Chase in 1912 and currently resides with "Mr. November", Derek Jeter. Although the Yankees have the greatest history of any sports franchise, the number of captains that it has employed is fairly low. After the death of the 5th captain, the great Lou Gehrig, manager Joe McCarthy declared that there would never be another Yankee captain. It was a statement made in respect to the legend of Gehrig, but held true until Yankees owner George Steinbrenner named Thurmon Munson the 6th captain in 1976.
