Document, Dialogue v Discussion

While reading through the following table---created by Matt Copeland for his book Socratic Circles: Fostering Critical and Creative Thinking in Middle and High School Students, consider the differences between dialogue and debate. Then, use Diigo to engage in a conversation around the following four questions:

1. Which type of conversation are students exposed to the most often in schools? What about in the media? In their interactions with peers?
2. Which type of conversation are your students more comfortable with? Does this answer change as students grow older? Would younger students be better at one type of conversation than their older peers? What about older students---is there a type of conversation that they can master easily?
3. Is one type of conversation "better" than the other? Should we be emphasizing one more than the other in our work with students? Does one play a larger role in building global citizens than the other?
4. What does your school do to systematically teach students the differences between dialogue and debate?

Britain will refuse to take in migrants evicted from 'The Jungle'

Britain will not take in hundreds of migrants evicted yesterday from the French refugee camp known as the Jungle, the Home Secretary claimed last night.

Alan Johnson insisted that suggestions Britain will be forced to accept some of the migrants were 'wrong'. He added he was 'delighted' French police had bulldozed the squalid camp near Calais.

However, evidence from France last night suggested Mr Johnson's optimism was seriously misplaced.
