Education Week: Stress, Control, and the Deprofessionalizing of Teaching

This one is really making me think about school change. I relate totally to the powerlessness aspect of Newkirk's argument; I can see it in some of the classes we have created.

Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com

  • People are correct when they say online education will take things out the classroom. But they are wrong, I think, when they assume it will make learning an independent, personal activity. Learning has to occur in a community.”
    • This is a key point in making those who feel that there are huge flaws in online learning. While there is definite potential for the "correspondence course" model they mention above to still be present, there are myriad ways in which online learning can be extremely communal. What I love about it is that it automatically eliminates pacing concerns in that students can move through material at a rate that is more to their style. - on 2009-08-21

Paul Halsall/Fordham University: Internet History Sourcebooks Project

A bit convoluted and in need of a web 2.0 makeover, but this site is great for ancillary materials that are free to use in your classroom.

The Impact of Electronic Communication on Writing

  • Whether one views these changes as positive or negative depends on how closely one believes writing should adhere to the conventions of formal writing we have hitherto accepted, and how much one supports the goal of establishing the student's authority as a writer. Some writing instructors philosophize that since e-writing tools and e-language will continue to change, they must teach what will not change: the connection between thinking and writing and the ability to articulate what one knows (Leibowitz, 1999). This standpoint will certainly encourage teachers to continue seeking more effective ways of using the e-tools in writing instruction.
    • To those of us who have worked with students as they publish for wider audiences, this line is extremely important. If we truly believe that students should write well, we should find a way for them to use the web to write frequently. - on 2008-12-30
