Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com
-
Add Sticky NotePeople are correct when they say online education will take things out the classroom. But they are wrong, I think, when they assume it will make learning an independent, personal activity. Learning has to occur in a community.”
- This is a key point in making those who feel that there are huge flaws in online learning. While there is definite potential for the "correspondence course" model they mention above to still be present, there are myriad ways in which online learning can be extremely communal. What I love about it is that it automatically eliminates pacing concerns in that students can move through material at a rate that is more to their style. - on 2009-08-21
REFLECTIONS ON CREATIVE WRITING CLASS: THE TEACHER; How to confront 30,000 words a week of teenage angst and ecstasy. - The New York Times

Op-Ed Contributor - End the University as We Know It - NYTimes.com
As always, I tend to look at the recommended changes for higher ed as a means to shift what we think about K-12. Not always the best way to think, but this article brings up some salient points about collaboration and change within departments.
-
Add Sticky NoteUnfortunately this mass-production university model has led to separation where there ought to be collaboration and to ever-increasing specialization.
- I think the same can be said for high schools and K-12. We see ourselves often as solely a content specialist in one area, whereas I wonder what would happen if we looked at ourselves through the lens the author uses later in the article when he talks about how he would restructure universities. - on 2009-04-30

Add Sticky Noteagile, adaptive and imaginative
- This word choice is fantastic. I love to see schools where these three words apply to the learning community--from the students to the faculty to the community. - on 2009-04-30

While unlikely, this just jumps up at me. As Josh wrote in the diigo notes for the page, what if we did this for schools?

CORRECTED - Technology Reshapes America's Classrooms - NYTimes.com
Great article. Should be required reading for all admins and teachers.

Add Sticky Note"Why would we ever buy a book when we can buy a computer?
Textbooks are often obsolete before they are even printed,"
said Debra Socia, principal of the school in Dorchester, a
tough Boston district prone to crime and poor schools.- How fitting is this one? When we proposed some new courses for the technology department, some of them asked if they were getting new textbooks to go along with the software (Flash, Dreamweaver, iLife, etc.). How is that possible? Versions come out only months after initial release that render the manauls outdated. - on 2008-07-16
Papers Facing Worst Year for Ad Revenue - NYTimes.com
This is an article I have been waiting for. Interesting to start to see the future of news. Yet, I still wonder how many people are getting their news from sources other than print or TV.
Can You Become a Creature of New Habits? - New York Times

“The first thing needed for innovation is a fascination with wonder,” says Dawna Markova, author of “The Open Mind” and an executive change consultant for Professional Thinking Partners. “But we are taught instead to ‘decide,’ just as our president calls himself ‘the Decider.’ ” She adds, however, that “to decide is to kill off all possibilities but one. A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities.”
-
The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of us inherently use our innovative and collaborative modes of thought.
