Add Sticky NoteThe big insight, as another administrator put it, was seeing ‘that we could sell our kids short, not out of disrespect for them, but out of our love for them.’ That was a big eye-opener.”
- This proves true in many cases in education; we fail to see that the love we have for our students and the concern we show for them could actually be part of the problem in getting them to achieve at higher levels. As Brian Crosby often states, learning is messy, and sometimes the processes by which students attain success is not "comfortable" for them. That's OK. - on 2009-10-03

I have said, “We must be explicit about what we want students to know, understand and be able to do.”
What some heard was, “You are not doing a good job.”
I have said, “We will be more effective [if] we collaborate and work together to figure out how to best meet the needs of our students.”
What some heard was, “You are not doing a good job.”
I have said, “The responsibilities of public education have changed; we can learn together how to be successful in this new environment.”
What some heard was, “You are not doing a good job.”
I have said, “I believe in the ability of teachers to reach and teach ALL children.”
What some heard was, “You are not doing a good job.”
- Ouch. But I think we've all been in this spot before when working with teachers and introducing change. We enter a room and immediately people feel their competence is in question. Starting from there, how do you build? - on 2009-06-12
Op-Ed Contributor - End the University as We Know It - NYTimes.com
As always, I tend to look at the recommended changes for higher ed as a means to shift what we think about K-12. Not always the best way to think, but this article brings up some salient points about collaboration and change within departments.
-
Add Sticky NoteUnfortunately this mass-production university model has led to separation where there ought to be collaboration and to ever-increasing specialization.
- I think the same can be said for high schools and K-12. We see ourselves often as solely a content specialist in one area, whereas I wonder what would happen if we looked at ourselves through the lens the author uses later in the article when he talks about how he would restructure universities. - on 2009-04-30

- This word choice is fantastic. I love to see schools where these three words apply to the learning community--from the students to the faculty to the community. - on 2009-04-30
Bad News for Newspapers - Interactive Graphic - NYTimes.com
This graphic is telling about the state of the newspaper business model. What I question, a little, is the rise in profits shown at the bottom for the NYT.
Printing The NYT Costs Twice As Much As Sending Every Subscriber A Free Kindle
While unlikely, this just jumps up at me. As Josh wrote in the diigo notes for the page, what if we did this for schools?
