Anyone preferring to time-shift The Apprentice from Wednesdays to weekends would be unable to read newspapers, listen to Five Live or visit BBC websites if they wished to avoid knowing the identity of the evictee. While The Apprentice is the most requested programme on iPlayer, most of these delayed consumers must be watching very soon after transmission.

The huge queues for pre-hyped books and movies when they are finally released suggest a culture of being first at an event, a culture that TV, by making it easier to see things later, is resisting.

Judges have undermined a law intended to stop defence lawyers cross-examining women in rape cases about their sexual history, by continuing to insist on their discretion to allow it, a new book discloses.

Interviews with 17 judges in London and Manchester found that some insisted they still had a wide discretion to allow questions on sexual history, although the law was changed in 2000 to impose severe limits on questioning.

"It's important to remember that as young teenagers, when your hormones are kicking in, unless you are homosexual yourself it is a very hard thing to conceive and understand, so the natural reaction is to make fun of it," said Beef Frankland, a senior youth worker at Prospex.

"It's not until you get the wider experience of life, mature and meet people that are gay and find out they are fine and no different to you that views actually change."
