When Everyone’s a Friend, Is Anything Private? (Asked how many members ever change a privacy setting, Mr. Kelly said 20%)

  • ... the popularity of Facebook and other social networking sites has promoted the sharing of all things personal, dissolving the line that separates the private from the public. ...

Facebook says it is the world’s largest social network, with 175 million members. But in the United States, most members are still relatively young; Facebook offers advertisers a target of 54.4 million members of all ages. But if an advertiser wants to narrow its target audience to those 25 or older, the number drops to 28.8 million. Narrow it to those 30 or older, and Facebook has 20.3 million to offer. ...

David E. Evans, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Virginia, says he wishes that Facebook would begin with more restrictions on the information that outside software developers can reach. For 15 of 19 information categories, Facebook sets a default setting of “share,” which means the information can be pulled out of Facebook and stored on servers outside its control. These 15 categories include activities, interests, photos and relationship status.

“Facebook could set defaults erring on the side of privacy instead of on the side of giving your information away,” he said.

Chris Kelly, Facebook’s chief privacy officer, defends its current settings, saying it “gives users extensive control over the applications they choose to interact with.” He also said Facebook had removed “thousands” of applications that members deemed untrustworthy.

In Professor Evans’s view, however, banishment of malevolent software comes too late: “Once the application has got the data, it’s got it, stored on someone else’s machine.”

The defaults turn out to be crucially important, because few users go to the trouble of adjusting the settings. Asked how many members ever change a privacy setting, Mr. Kelly said 20 percent.

Sweden tops UN’s information technology development index

  • “The report shows that overall the magnitude of the global digital divide remains unchanged between 2002 and 2007. Despite significant improvements in the developing world, the gap between the ICT haves and have-nots remains,” the agency said in a news release.

The research found that the most advanced countries in ICT are from northern Europe, with the exception of the Republic of Korea, which ranks second, followed by Denmark, the Netherlands, Iceland and Norway.

These countries are followed by other, mainly high-income countries from Europe, Asia and North America. Western and northern Europe and North America are the regions with the highest IDI scores, and most countries from these regions are among the top 20 ICT economies, according to the ITU.

The agency added that poor countries, in particular the least developed countries (LDCs), remain at the lower end of the index with limited access to ICT infrastructure, including fixed and mobile telephony, Internet and broadband.

Coming of age on the Internet (reduces inhibition, leading to unusually intimate talk)

  • First, the sheer number of teenagers now using the Internet has transformed the technology into a true social networking tool. Even in the late 90s, only about one in ten adolescents were online, which meant that kids actually had to choose between online relationships and real relationships. There was very little overlap, so it was very difficult to maintain flesh-and-blood relations while exploring cyberspace. Today, Valkenburg and Peter say, the vast majority of teenagers in Western countries have access to the Internet, and most appear to use the technology to nurture their existing relationships rather than to forge new ones.

Second, the newer communication tools also encourage building on existing relationships rather than isolating. In the 90s, the few teens who did spend time on the Internet tended to hang out with strangers in public chat rooms and so-called MUDS, multi-user dungeons. The appearance of instant messaging and social networks like Facebook has changed all that, according to the psychologists. Today, more than eight in ten teenagers use IM to connect with the same friends they see at school and work.

Recent studies document the positive effects of these technological changes. But what exactly is going on in the minds of the teenagers to produce this greater sense of well-being? Valkenburg and Peter believe that the 21st century Internet encourages honest talking about very personal issues - feelings, worries, vulnerabilities - that are difficult for many self-conscious teens to talk about. When they communicate through the Internet, they have fewer sounds and sights and social cues to distract them, so they become less concerned with how others perceive them. This in turn reduces inhibition, leading to unusually intimate talk.

What Matters: The collaborative company (a fundamental generational shift in consumption)

  • The next 10 to 20 years will be marked by two trends. First, there will be systemization and widespread adoption of social practices that engage millions of people in effective, self-directed, socially motivated production. Second, there will be an increasing sophistication of what I call “social contract enterprises”—companies that have learned how to become trusted platforms for productive social practices. ...

As companies begin to see the social practices that make up peer production not as fads but as a fundamental generational shift in consumption, they will have to embrace these socially conscious values. They cannot afford to be seen as working in opposition to them or, increasingly, they will risk offending their users/customers. Such changes are not easy, so it is natural that we are seeing the adoption of diverse strategies.

Broadband is becoming more vital for consumers in UK

  • The results of recent research have indicated that having broadband access has become increasingly vital for consumers in the UK, with households using their broadband access for a variety of purposes, from educational and career improvement to entertainment, research, shopping, and more. The research showed that this year around seventeen million households in the UK will make the most of broadband technology to improve their Internet experience.

Officials have said that the falling cost of broadband deals has made having broadband access in the home the norm within the UK rather than the luxury that it was once considered to be. An increasing number of customers will be enticed by low cost bundle deals and increased competition amongst broadband providers, according to industry officials.

Officials also said that the increased availability of entertainment online, such as BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and various gaming sites had increased demand for higher speed broadband access, with most consumers now refusing to put up with the slow speeds and frustration that comes with having dial up broadband access.

Consumers in a downturn: a new spending habit? (The question is whether we might habituate to a lower level of spending)

  • The standing expectation is that consumers who scale down will scale back up when prosperity and credit return. But it is possible that the new, more modest, positively Amsterdamian, consumption pattern will prove sticky. This is what happened in Japan in the 1990s. Consumers gave up free spending ways and never came back. As Tabuchi put in in the New York Times, "free-spending consumers [turned] into misers, making them a dead weight on Japan's economy."

A change of this order takes a full-on anthropological investigation. In the meantime, we may speculate. I think Scitvosky's model might be useful here. He shows how the pleasure of a new purchase devolves into comfort and I wonder if the reverse is also true. Displeasure, as we move to a lower level of consumption, might for some consumers eventually lose its sting and turn to comfort too. Or not.

The question is whether we might habituate to a lower level of spending. I think this can only happen if some of the deeper cultural drivers of the consumer culture fall silent. These would include competitive spending. (This is largely dead among some Millenials.)

The two worlds of kids’ morals (The more children used the Internet, the more they found invasion of privacy, videogame violence acceptable)

How social networking might change the world

  • ... just a month after O'Reilly's clarion call, the Obama election campaign launched the Obama '08 iPhone application. The application organised and prioritised contacts in key battleground states, "making it easy [for campaigners] to reach out and make an impact quickly".

... Zimride is a carpool scheme powered by Google maps, a social network and, according to the Zimride site, a "ride-matching algorithm". Since its inception in 2007, Zimride claims to have enabled some 300,000 users worldwide to carpool who might otherwise never have met.

Thorpe thinks social media applications like this one might be the way of the future. Facebook users might one day compete to see who can gain the most "global karma points", he says – working for the greater good, rather than for their own amusement.

Svensk?

Vad svarar man?

Expanding broadband to bail out economies (The crisis is making countries push forward with their digital agendas much more aggressively)

  • "The crisis is making countries push forward with their digital agendas much more aggressively," said Charlie Davies, a senior analyst at Ovum, a telecommunications consultancy. "There's this competition internationally to want to be there at the top and say, 'We're the most digitally advanced country, a great place to do business and all that."'

Most of these plans seek to expand connections to rural areas where they currently are unavailable, in some cases talking about turning broadband into a universal service like electricity or running water. Another common goal is to speed up existing links through incentives to build faster fixed-line and wireless telecommunications networks. ...

While analysts agree that investing in communications technologies makes economies more competitive, they are skeptical about whether the promised gains will materialize quickly enough to make the spending packages - ranging from €11 million, or $14 million, in Hungary to $7 billion in the United States - effective recession-busters. Allocating funds for new networks, so that new cables can be laid, could take many months; completion of those networks might take years.

"So there would only really be a sizable stimulus if we are in a very long recession," said Ian Fogg, an analyst at Forrester Research.

The international scramble to improve broadband connections has accelerated since Barack Obama, who made information technology a focus of his presidential campaign, won election to the White House in November.

iPod, Kindle, Facebook — and a Nomad Called Me (home is not where the heart is, but where there’s a connection)

  • Thanks to the rise of place-shifting and devices such as Sling Media’s SlingBox, even my television travels with me. And when that’s not possible, I just buy and download shows from either Amazon or Apple. I even took my favorite television show, “Criminal Minds,” for a ride across the country (or rather, the planet) last week.

Now I want to carry all my books with me, too.

Books, music, videos…they all represent the proverbial hearth. My library, easy chair and music system have long constituted what I considered home. But over the past few years, that has started to change — whether it’s just me or the new human condition, I’m not sure. I think it’s a bit of both. Thanks to the availability of cheap wireless connections, we are getting rid of another fixture in our homes: the landline phone. Every quarter, there are roughly 3 million fewer landline phones. A few changes of clothes and a computer, and suddenly home is not where the heart is, but where there’s a connection.

Facebook et al risk 'infantilising' the human mind (short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity)

  • The startling warning from Lady Greenfield, professor of synaptic pharmacology at Lincoln college, Oxford, and director of the Royal Institution, has led members of the government to admit their work on internet regulation has not extended to broader issues, such as the psychological impact on children.

Greenfield believes ministers have not yet looked at the broad cultural and psychological effect of on-screen friendships via Facebook, Bebo and Twitter.

She told the House of Lords that children's experiences on social networking sites "are devoid of cohesive narrative and long-term significance. As a consequence, the mid-21st century mind might almost be infantilised, characterised by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity". ...

"The sheer compulsion of reliable and almost immediate reward is being linked to similar chemical systems in the brain that may also play a part in drug addiction. So we should not underestimate the 'pleasure' of interacting with a screen when we puzzle over why it seems so appealing to young people."

Greenfield also warned there was a risk of loss of empathy as children read novels less. "Unlike the game to rescue the princess, where the goal is to feel rewarded, the aim of reading a book is, after all, to find out more about the princess herself."

Almost half of California seniors struggle to survive (47 percent of state residents 65 and older are unable to pay for their basic needs)

  • The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research report measured economic stability by the real costs to eat, travel and pay for medical costs and housing in each of California's 58 counties.

Its findings reveal 47 percent of state residents 65 and older are unable to pay for their basic needs. That's 864,000 seniors, more than half of whom struggle at home alone.

The new data reveal far deeper poverty rates among seniors than was previously known.
