The officer rehired to turnaround the financial mess at Nortel Networks (TSX:NT) surprised analysts Tuesday by announcing plans to exit the company, a move that one industry watcher called a "setback" for the telecommunications equipment provider.
But in early 2005, after leaving the bank, Currie was called back to help cleanup Nortel's financial practices in the midst of turmoil from a lengthy accounting crisis that resulted in huge shareholder lawsuits, regulatory investigations and the firing of key executives, including CEO Frank Dunn.

- The 56-year-old executive has a long-time relationship with Nortel, working in a variety of positions during three separate periods of his career. He started in the finance department in 1979 and, after leaving Nortel in 1992, returned as senior vice-president and chief financial officer in 1994. He stayed with the company until 1997 before leaving for a job as CFO for Royal Bank (TSX:RY).
