Newsy | The News With More Views
I just came across your blog while browsing for articles about the future of journalism. I am a recent journalism graduate from Missouri so this is a topic I am constantly researching. I particularly enjoy the fact that your site is multi-faceted in its coverage, from new media to newspapers to citizen journalism. One post in particular (“Desperation Drives Collaboration”) brought to light the debate about paid content. It is my opinion that though the newspaper as a medium may be dying, journalism is merely evolving and should willingly adapt to the new culture of news. New business models will spring up via innovative presentation techniques, likely involving the new media consumers are using to get their news.
I’m currently interning for an Internet start-up company called Newsy.com, partnered with the University of Missouri’s Journalism School. The goal is to provide students with an opportunity to work in a dynamic news environment using online video.
Basically, Newsy.com creates videos that analyze and synthesize news coverage of important global issues from multiple sources. Its method of presenting the way in which different media outlets around the world are covering a story lends itself well to understanding the complexities of political issues, among many other topics. I think Newsy’s unique approach would appeal to you and the topics of your site.
For example, today Newsy began covering the different perspectives around the world on the upcoming Iranian elections in order to give viewers the opportunity to formulate their own opinions and to present sources viewers would not normally be exposed to.

Please let me know what you think; I would love your feedback.

Los Angeles Times Pressmens 20 Year Club: Circulation Milestone at the Los Angeles Times
Happy to see your return after the short break, we all need to get away from our computers occasionally.
While you were away I broke the story regarding the circulation decline at the Los Angeles Times, which the company claims was over exaggerated on my part. http://www.edpadgett.com/blog/2009/06/circulation-milestone-at-los-angeles.html#links
Unfortunately my circulation numbers are correct, based on actual newspapers produced, with the LA Times basing their numbers on the audit in March 2009 by the audit of circulation company. Back in March we dropped the California Section, which caused the descent of readers from our newspaper.
We will be announcing that the LA Times will begin printing the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and possibly several addition newspapers some time soon. We have had many interesting visitors to our two press-rooms the past three weeks, the publisher of the Orange County Register, representatives from the San Diego Union-Tribune, and rep's from the Sun Times of San Bernandino.
Take care,
Edward

Reporters | Oyster
Good Morning Paul,
My apologies if you already saw this—I saw it fitting several areas. Financed by Bain Capital Ventures, Oyster Hotel Reviews launched yesterday and is a hotel/resort review site available for your readers who are looking for unbiased and independent authentic information about travel accommodations (as opposed to some sites along the likes of Trip Advisor, Hotel Chatter, Expedia etc.). All photos and reviews come from a staff of over 15 experienced travel reporters who were hired to investigate hotels from New York to Miami, Aruba and Vegas among others to provide independent and reliable information for your traveling readers.
What makes Oyster stand out? The unique part of Oyster is that they do not just review general information about hotels like food, rooms, cleanliness (although those are a thorough part of what they do cover) they also review items like hottest pool scene, worst place to take a family, best hotel to have an affair, best cliff diving places etc.
Media: As many media companies cut staff and shut down due to the economy, hundreds of experienced reporters are looking for various job opportunities. Oyster.com is a great opportunity for these journalists as they provide full benefits, competitive salary and a job that includes travel to various hotels around the world fully paid for—who wouldn’t want that as a job? Over 15 reporters currently make up the travel review team with experience ranging from Men’s Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Forbes, Travel and Leisure, New York Magazine and Conde Naste Traveler to name a few. To check out a list of all of the Oyster reporters you can go to: http://www.oyster.com/about/reporters/
Financials and Founders: Financed by Bain Capital Ventures and led by an accomplished and experienced management team, Oyster Hotel Reviews is the first and only company dedicated to publishing objective, in-depth reviews, written by trained journalists, of the world's hotels. Hotels cannot pay to be reviewed nor can they influence

Flint Journal motors into future with new site
The Flint Journal, a member of your WIP list, built a brand-new, $30 million, 80K sq. ft. building in Sept 2004. More proof the executives at newspapers have had their heads in the sand. Here's the link to the info about the new building. It never made any sense. A blind man could have told them 10 years ago newspapers were history, and yet they ran out and built this Taj Mahal. Incredible.
