While questions here remain open, I offer in total, 30 reasons why there is so much excitement for open education today. In this article, I point to 10 reasons a college, university, or other type of organization or institution would share its course materials and other educational contents online. Then I provide a similar list related to the benefits that educators might experience from sharing educational contents that they have creatively designed and used. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I address the learner, both formal and informal.

ACU Connected: Mobile Learning - Abilene Christian University
In the fall of 2008, ACU became the first university to distribute Apple iPhones and iPod touches to the incoming freshman class, allowing us to explore a new vision for mobile learning. Now all freshmen and their teachers are able to integrate technology and learning both in and out of the classroom. The initiative began in the fall with the introduction of a portal, ACU Mobile, to help connect students to the campus through news and calendars, course documents and media, in-class surveys and polls.

Facilitating Online is a course intended for training educators as online facilitators of fully online and mixed mode courses. The Centre for Educational Technology (CET) produced a Course Leader’s Guide as an Open Educational Resource to assist educators and trainers who wish to implement a course on online facilitation within their institution or across several institutions. The guide contains the course model, week-by-week learning activities, general guidance to the course leader on how to implement and customise the course and specific guidelines on each learning activity.

Free Moodle Web Conferencing Block and Activity - WiZiQ Live Class
The online Virtual Classroom on WiZiQ is a free alternative to expensive conferencing tools selling as online teaching/learning software.
