Calvin Carl "Kelly" Gotlieb, CM, FRSC (born March 27, 1921) is a Canadian professor and computer scientist who has been called the "Father of Computing" in Canada. He is the Professor Emeritus in Computer Science at the University of Toronto.
First, that we always pay a price for technology; the greater the technology, the greater the price
Second, that there are always winners and losers, and that the winners always try to persuade the losers that they are really winners
Third, that there is embedded in every great technology an epistemological, political or social prejudice. Sometimes that bias is greatly to our advantage. Sometimes it is not. The printing press annihilated the oral tradition; telegraphy annihilated space; television has humiliated the word; the computer, perhaps, will degrade community life. And so on.
Fourth, technological change is not additive; it is ecological, which means, it changes everything and is, therefore, too important to be left entirely in the hands of Bill Gates.
And fifth, technology tends to become mythic; that is, perceived as part of the natural order of things, and therefore tends to control more of our lives than is good for us. .... When a technology become mythic, it is always dangerous because it is then accepted as it is, and is therefore not easily susceptible to modification or control.
Here is a collection of great tips that we've collected over the years, from our staff, readers, and authors, mainly from the old Make_Tips twitter feed. Feel free to add some of your own.
Engineering notation is a version of scientific notation in which the powers of ten must be multiples of three (i.e., they are powers of a thousand, but written as, for example, 10^6 instead of 1,000^2). As an alternative to writing powers of 10, SI prefixes can be used, which also usually provide steps of a factor of a thousand.
At the heart of the hash table algorithm is a simple array of items; this is often simply called the hash table. Hash table algorithms calculate an index from the data item's key and use this index to place the data into the array.
In computer science, linear search or sequential search is a method for finding a particular value in a list, that consists of checking every one of its elements, one at a time and in sequence, until the desired one is found.
In computer science, a binary search or half-interval search algorithm locates the position of an item in a sorted array
Lazarus is a free and open source development tool for the Free Pascal compiler, which is also free and open source. The Lazarus IDE is a stable and feature rich programming environment for creating standalone graphical and console applications. Lazarus currently runs on Linux, Mac OS X and Win32 and provides a customizable source editor and visual form creation environment along with a package manager, debugger and complete GUI integration with the Free Pascal compiler.

Momentum is building in the support for the electronic portfolio as a valuable digitally-based tool for learners, instructors, and academic organizations. These may be produced in various digital environments such as web-based applications like wikis or in the form of a web-page driven CD/DVD-ROM.
