70 Percent of Journalists Use Social Networks to Assist Reporting
According to a new survey from Middleberg Communications and the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR), as reported in PRWeek , 70 percent of journalists said they use social networks to assist in reporting (compared to 41 percent last year).
What should journalism schools be teaching their students?
you also have to suspect most of these students are working toward a journalism degree because they want to be journalists. The question they’ll face upon graduation is what kinds of journalism jobs will exist?
Whatever those jobs are, journalism students will be better equipped to qualify for them if they have learned the following as part of their education:
What democratized news can do is help keep other reporters honest
What democratized news can do is help keep other reporters honest, because everyone now has a voice, right or wrong. If you’re a journalist and you know someone else’s reporting is inaccurate or untruthful, then prove it. If you want to show the world that your degree means you have a “higher” ethical standard than someone who doesn’t, then prove it. If you want to show FOX news is full of crap, prove it. But make sure you’re right, and you’ve done your homework.
New media vs. old media: A portrait of the Drudge Report 2002-2008
The Drudge Report is one of the founding flag bearers of “new media”: a U.S.–based news aggregator founded in the late 1990s that has developed a reputation for breaking tomorrow’s news today. The site has become a powerful force in the U.S. media sphere and its founder was named one of Time Magazine’s most influential people in 2006. In existence for more than a decade, the Drudge Report makes an ideal case study for examining the “new media versus old media” argument.
Michael Jackson's death and its lessons for online journalists covering breaking news
Perhaps a few hyper-efficient bloggers can work the phones, monitor the Twitterverse, update social networks and write for the website... all at the same time. But newsrooms with multiple staffers on hand at any given moment shouldn't have to rely on a single person to step up and assume the role of multimedia superstar. Large staffs (even diminished ones) remain traditional newsroom's competitive advantage during breaking news. Why waste it?
In Iran, Journalism Makes Use of Unverified News (NYTimes)
“Check the source” may be the first rule of journalism. But in the coverage of the protests in Iran this month, some news organizations have adopted a different stance: publish first, ask questions later. If you still don’t know the answer, ask your readers.
Michael Jackson, the Twitter effect, and the 'science' of reporting
The untimely death of Michael Jackson had a huge impact on parts of the web, and perhaps also highlighted one of the differences between blogging and reporting
Iconic Video from Tehran Protests Demands New Skills of Journalists
In the world of journalism, the video and its global journey underscore a new reality of news gathering that mixes the roles of journalists and the people they serve more dramatically than ever before.
