- I am torn about the right order. I often use alphabetical order to make it easy to determine if a particular property has been set. But part of me really wants to group related properties together.

- Validation helps you find that unmatched opening tag or forgotten quote. I regularly use validation as a sanity check after adding a significant amount of content and markup to a page.

When relying on floats for layouts, make sure they clear properly.

- I generally use clear:both by default. I only specify left or right if there is a specific reason. This applies mostly to div layout I suppose rather than simply floating images etcetera.

If you build a site testing in a broken browser, your code begins relying on the broken rendering of that browser.
Make sure your desired effect actually exists.

There are browser-specific CSS extensions that aren’t in the official spec.
Divide and Conquer: use commenting to turn off large sections of style.
Some users will definitely have a larger or smaller default than you; try to accomodate as large a range as possible.
Add obvious borders to help debug layouts.
Name classes/IDs based on function, not appearance.

If you create a .smallblue class, and later get a request to change the text to large and red, the class stops making any form of sense. Instead use descriptive classes like .copyright and .pullquote.

For reading at arm's length, 1px thus corresponds to about 0.26 mm
(1/96 inch). When printed on a laser printer, meant for reading at a
little less than arm's length (55 cm, 21 inches), 1px is about
0.20 mm. On a 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) printer, that may be
rounded up to 3 dots (0.25 mm); on a 600 dpi printer, it can
be rounded to 5 dots.

The two images below illustrate the effect of viewing distance on
the size of a pixel and the effect of a device's resolution. In the
first image, a reading distance of 71 cm (28 inch) results
in a px of 0.26 mm, while a reading distance of 3.5 m
(12 feet) requires a px of 1.3 mm.

Do you...
1. Post a jpg of your comp to the web and send them a URL?
2. Put it on your laptop or flash drive to present it on screen?
3. Print it out and show them a paper version?
Obviously, meeting in person isn't always practical, especially if the client is more than a short drive away. When the option is available though, take advantage of it.
Post it Online
There are a few downsides to this method though. For starters, you lose all control over how the client sees your hard work. No matter how many computers they have at their disposal, a client will inevitably choose the slowest one with the most obsolete browser and least flattering display.
When I have brought along a computer, I've noticed that clients tend to get distracted from the task of reviewing your comp.
