After getting a glimpse of Avast's new mobile security solution a few weeks ago, I just had to dive in and give the app a full review. Avast, the long-awaited marriage of Avast and IT Agents' Theft Aware (see our review), certainly doesn't disappoint. It has an insane number of features, all of which appear to work perfectly, and it sounds like things will only be improving with time.
And did I mention the full-featured, root-enhanced app is completely free with no paid version in sight? As in, even the previously paid (Theft-Aware used to cost 10EUR) features.

TalkO’Clock is a free website and service that, in its most basic usage, let’s you request a wake-up call at a specific time from an unspecified person. As an example, let’s say that you have to get up for work at noon. You can log into TalkO’Clock and request a wake-up call for noon, specify if you want to get a call from a male, female, robot, or no preference. Then, your call request goes up on a web page where other users of TalkO’Clock can see it, and click a link to have the TalkO’Clock service call their phone and connect them to yours, totally anonymously.

So, at noon, you get a call from a total stranger who may be able to provide an uplifting conversation, a weird anecdote, a joke, or whatever they can think of to get you out of bed and motivated for the day. Since it’s totally anonymous, it’s safe as long as you don’t offer any personal information to them, and there’s a lot of variety in what kind of friendships or connections could arise from such an encounter.

In recent years, the term "portable" has quickly come to be associated with apps that you run off a USB memory stick. However, to me, "portable" has always meant that I could easily move apps from one machine to another without too much incovenience. In fact, in the earlier days, I had my portable apps in a separate partition on the harddisk so that when I reinstall or upgrade Windows, I didn't have to reinstall/reconfigure my favorite apps. So in my mind at that time, portablity didn't involve a removable storage device at all.

Portable apps are nice because I can easily pass them to a colleague or friend ("Hey, try out this latest version of Firefox with my favorite addons!"), or help out friends when they run into problems with their PCs (eg. file recovery, network diagnosis). I can upgrade to a newer machine and have my favorite apps up and running in no time, instead of having to spend the entire day swapping CDs and reinstalling/reconfiguring apps that I need. This really made my computing life better.

Since then, I have learnt that some people actually live a nomadic computing life; that they may hop from PC to PC with only their USB memory stick; that they may be using an old machine with some incredibly old version of Windows that has never been updated; that they may only have guest access to the host machine; that they may not want to leave any trace on the host machine after they unplug their USB memory stick.
