For now, your best option is to use whatever chemical formula editor you think is best, then:
- print to PDF
- open PDF with Inkscape
- save as ODG
- open ODG with OOo Draw
You can save SVGs from Inkscape and import them into OOo Draw with the SVG import extension, but I've had better success with saving ODGs in Inkscape.

OpenOffice.org Solutions
From OpenOffice.org Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search
The goal of this page is to list free and commercial solutions that might be important and helpful to companies, organizations, and individuals who want to adopt OpenOffice.org.
For each category first those solutions are listed that focus on "vanilla" OpenOffice.org (the OpenOffice.org that can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org) instead of OpenOffice.org-based products like the StarOffice software or Novell's edition of OpenOffice.org. For companion products like the email and calendar servers the actual office suite flavor makes no difference, and thus does not affect the order in this list. The next order criteria is price. Solutions free of cost are listed first whereas commercial solutions are listed last. Within the commercial solutions those are listed first where it is known that the vendors/organizations contribute or have contributed to OpenOffice.org.
DISCLAIMER: Since the status of and the information about solutions can change, please check always the solution's website for the latest information.

Speed Up OpenOffice ~ Windows Fanatics
from Fred Langa’s Langalist.
Apparently OpenOffice exhibits this behavior because it also loads the Java Runtime Environment on startup, to handle databases. If you don’t connect to databases when using OO, you can make it behave more reasonably.
Open Writer, or one of the other OO applications, and select Tools, Options. Click on Java, and deselect “Use Java Runtime Environment.” I tried it, and it now opens much faster and only uses about 30 MB of RAM. If you like this excellent office suite, it’s worth your time to make this simple adjustment.
