" upgraded my Inspiron 1721 a while back to Windows 7 x64 without any issues. I did a quick peek on the specs of a 1525 and the look about the same as mine.
I decided to use all of the "built in" drivers that Windows 7 would detect and install and had no problems at all. I'd say let Windows 7 stay as "raw" as possible with the drivers they provide, and only pull the Dell ones if you're having some odd performance issues or the hardware isn't detected.
In a few cases where I needed to pull drivers off the Resource CD, the x64 version of them worked fine. I think the only device I didn't "recover" was the special touch pad driver, so I could use it, but didn't have access to the horizontal and vertical "scroll bars" on the edges of the touchpad.
That said, I was quite happy with the upgrade, and had even better performance out of it than when I was running Vista on it. I had 2GB of RAM, and I'd recommend keeping that level or higher if you're going to do the upgrade."

"Windows 7 on an Inspiron 1721
I have the 1721 and installed Windows 7 which is working satisfactorily.
Checked the upgrade advisor and said it was compatible, but Dell don't list the 1721 as a computer that is compatibale. Was running 32bit Vista Premium, and wanted to upgrade to the W7 64bit version. I am running a AMD turion 64, 1.9Ghz
I can confirm there is no way to upgrade from 32 to 64 and you have to do a fresh install. Some people have reported HDD driver problems, but no such problems for me. I did have a sound problem, (no mic/input) but downloading the latest Sigmatel driver package seemed to fix that. I do have one "base system" component that does have an error in the Device Manager, but that doesn't seem to be affecting the performance of the PC.
Overall Windows 7 is running well, I think there is slightly improved performance, but is probably due to me not re installing all my previous programs (ie. discarding the ones I didn't really use) and the windows easy transfer program works well.
So overall working satisfactorily and am enjoying the improved functionality of Windows Media Centre.

"Well, out of curiosity I went back to the Dell Driver and Download page and downloaded the 1395 WLAN minicard driver that they recommended for Windows Vista 64-bit, which is the file Dell_multi-device_A17_R174292.exe. I double clicked it and it installed the driver version 4.170.25.17, dated 10/12/2007, which is almost a year and a whole revision number earlier than the one the Windows 7 installer pulled in (v5.30.21.0, 10/1/2008). But immediately I got my 4 bars back and things seem to work fine. Don't know what the difference is though. I'll report back if any problems arise with using this earlier version here, but so far I am pleased.

"ou may also try to switch from AHCI to SATA mode in BIOS to check the issue.
Have you tried to search for the motherboard driver from the Dell Website or contact Dell Support for more information?"
"Based on the info posted on the Dell website, the laptop does in fact have an optical drive that can read DVDs, the problem may be that his optical drive is not comaptible with Windows 7:
