AMSC Signs $450M Follow-On Order For Wind Turbine Components

  • American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) announced that it has received a $450 million order from Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Corporation Limited for core electrical components for 1.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbines.
  • AMSC's wind turbine electrical systems and core electrical components include the company's proprietary PowerModuleTM power converters. They enable reliable wind turbine operation by controlling power flows, regulating voltage, monitoring system performance and controlling the pitch of wind turbine blades to maximize efficiency.

Solar to be cheaper than grid next year

  • Prices for solar components are set to drop by next year from about $3.80 per watt to about $1.40 a watt. According to Dean Cooper, an analyst at Ambrian Capital, the global manufacturing capacity for solar modules is set to increase “dramatically”, from 3 gigawatts last year to 15 to 20 gigawatts of production by 2010.

Study Supports U.S. Wind Expansion | Worldwatch Institute

  • Wind energy can supply 20 percent of U.S. electricity needs by 2030 at a "modest" cost difference, a new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report says.
