Global Development: Views from the Center: India Sees (Some Of) the Light on Solar Thermal Potential
-
We will pool all our scientific, technical and managerial talents, with financial sources, to develop solar energy as a source of abundant energy to power our economy and to transform the lives of our people.
-
The solar thermal section, for example, oddly fails to mention recent advances in flat-panel, Fresnel-based systems, which are likely the cheapest and fastest to install. With U.S.-based Ausra opening a factory in Nevada to produce more than 700 MW of such systems annually, how about a licensed sister factory in Mumbai?

The TaxPayers' Alliance - Economics 101: Is wave power worth £15 billion?
-
Energy consultancy PB Power estimate (PPT, pg. 20) that wave power costs around 19p per KWh more than conventional sources. Multiplying that by 20% of our 405,884 GWh of electricity generation each year (PDF, pg. 126) suggests that in 2006, the latest year for which data is available, such a switch would have cost £15.4 billion. That's around 1.2% of GDP, a bit under half the defence budget or a crossrail every year.
The Seattle Times: Opinion: Tapping into tidal power

A major early target could be in the Gulf Stream as it flows between Florida and Bermuda, where the 6.1-mile-per-hour current is 23,000 times the magnitude of the river flow at Niagara Falls.
AMSC Signs $450M Follow-On Order For Wind Turbine Components
-
American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) announced that it has received a $450 million order from Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Corporation Limited for core electrical components for 1.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbines.
-
AMSC's wind turbine electrical systems and core electrical components include the company's proprietary PowerModuleTM power converters. They enable reliable wind turbine operation by controlling power flows, regulating voltage, monitoring system performance and controlling the pitch of wind turbine blades to maximize efficiency.

Solar to be cheaper than grid next year
-
Prices for solar components are set to drop by next year from about $3.80 per watt to about $1.40 a watt. According to Dean Cooper, an analyst at Ambrian Capital, the global manufacturing capacity for solar modules is set to increase “dramatically”, from 3 gigawatts last year to 15 to 20 gigawatts of production by 2010.

Study Supports U.S. Wind Expansion | Worldwatch Institute
-
Wind energy can supply 20 percent of U.S. electricity needs by 2030 at a "modest" cost difference, a new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report says.
-
The analysis predicts that the 20 percent wind scenario would cost about 2 percent more than sticking with the current energy mix, which relies more heavily on traditional fossil fuels.
