Certainly, education needs to be improved. But the suggestion that it caused or contributed to the subprime meltdown and the jobless recovery is risible. The meltdown was caused largely by irresponsible Wall Street and banking industry risk-taking, fostered by perverse incentives and an absence of regulation. The jobless recovery is caused, inter alia, by a tax and regulatory structure that makes it less expensive to produce offshore than domestically, combined with a corporate culture that exalts short-term profits above all else and has no concern at all for employees. Yes, by all means, improve education. But don't use poor education as just another excuse to blame economic catastrophe on its victims.

Dowd recounts some interesting ideas (which she got from other people) about saving newspapers. She has a couple of good Mort Zuckerman quotes about the importance of an independent press. Most interesting are the proposals to let newspapers run online gambling, making vice support virtue.

There's little point in watering down health care reform plans in a quixotic attempt to win "conservative" support. So-called conservatives (as distinguished from real conservatives, who are not merely tools of the rich and corporations) will oppose any reform that threatens their paymasters' unearned profits.
