Certainly, education needs to be improved. But the suggestion that it caused or contributed to the subprime meltdown and the jobless recovery is risible. The meltdown was caused largely by irresponsible Wall Street and banking industry risk-taking, fostered by perverse incentives and an absence of regulation. The jobless recovery is caused, inter alia, by a tax and regulatory structure that makes it less expensive to produce offshore than domestically, combined with a corporate culture that exalts short-term profits above all else and has no concern at all for employees. Yes, by all means, improve education. But don't use poor education as just another excuse to blame economic catastrophe on its victims.
