The Global Sun Temperature Project
This website created by Stevens Institute of Technology and the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) allows students from around the world to work together to determine how average daily temperatures and hours of sunlight change with distance from the equator. Recommended for students in upper elementary, middle, and high school.
NSTA :: Teaching Through Trade Books: Seasons by the Sun
This free article from the NSTA journal Science and Children describes science lessons that incorporate trade books for students in grades K-3 and 4-6, including Arctic Lights, Arctic Nights.
List of Previous JCE Classroom Activities
A JCE Classroom Activity is a hands-on activity that can be done in the classroom or laboratory and/or as a take home project. They are generally intended to be fun or thought-provoking introductions to new ideas or topics, to spark discussion, and to lead to further study and experimentation. In addition, some activities have interdisciplinary applications.
Lesson Plans - What's Happening to the Emperor Penguins?
Students will learn about emperor penguins' habitat and behaviors through Web sites such as National Geographic Creature Feature: Emperor Penguins and will illustrate a map to show what they have learned. They will view pictures of icebergs that are affecting penguin colonies and consider what impacts these icebergs might have on the penguins. They will conclude by writing paragraphs describing the maps that they have illustrated.
Penguin units: Sea World (Grades 4-8)
Interdisciplinary units – science, math, geography, and language arts.
Penguinscience - understanding penguin response to climate and ecosystem change
Your students follow six Adelie penguin families via data and pictures, updated daily. Students can create field books and record observations, weather conditions, and nest status. The data can also be used for the Nesting Time and Population Counts activities. The education page of the Penguin Science web site also includes several other activities and information about Antarctica.
Arctic Tern Migration Simulation (Grades 3-5)
Students create a model arctic tern using patterns and heavy card stock.
They simulate fishing, nesting, and migration using their models.
Lesson Plans - Arctic Terns From North to South
The arctic tern is an amazing migratory bird, traveling over 22,000
miles in a year from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again.
Students will map this bird's migration route and consider why it wants
to migrate so far. They will conclude by writing paragraphs describing
the arctic tern's migration route and explaining how they think it knows
when it's time to migrate.
Arctic and Antarctic Birds -- Lessons and Activities
While birds and other animals are popular topics with elementary students, it can sometimes be challenging to create truly hands-on lessons about them. With the help of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we're pleased to provide a nine-lesson unit that ties observation and study of birds with physical science concepts. We also include lessons that deal with pollution's effect on birds and migration.
Macaulay Library : Physics of Animal Behavior
We've developed nine lessons using bird behavior to teach physical setting and living environment standards. Below are links to selected sound and video examples from the Macaulay Library that can be used with the lessons or on their own.

ReadWriteThink: Lesson Plan: All About Our Town: Using Brochures to Teach Informational Writing
Students create brochures using print and nonprint resources. Teachers
can modify the lesson so that students are creating a travel brochure
about an ecosystem (such as the tundra) instead of one about the local
community.
Climate Change North | Bearly Any Ice
This game is similar to tag that simulates the prey and predator relationship between polar bears and ringed seals. It demonstrates the drastic impact of global warming by linking the amount of sea ice and length of season of sea ice to the survival of the polar bear.
The Living Edens: Activities for the Classroom - The Wolf and the Moose
Students role-play a predator/prey relationship. This activity could be
modified to focus on any predator/prey pair found in the tundra.
Asteroid Impact
TE Curricular Unit: Asteroid Impact
Grade: 7 (6-8)
Summary
Asteroid Impact is an 8-10 class long (350-450 min) earth science curricular unit where student teams are posed with the scenario that an asteroid will impact earth. They must design the location and size of underground caverns to save the people from uninhabitable earth for one year. Driven by this adventure scenario, student teams (1) explore general and geological maps, (2) determine the area of their classroom to help determine the cavern size required, (3) learn about map scales, (4) test rocks, (5) identify important and not-so-important rock properties for underground caverns, and (6) choose a final location and size. The unit also reinforces a number of math, reading and writing standards.
NSDL.org - Teachers' Domain: Digital Media Resources Pathway - The National Science Digital Library
Teachers’ Domain is an online library of more than 1,000 free media resources from the best in public television. These classroom resources, featuring media from NOVA, Frontline, Design Squad, American Experience, and other public broadcasting and content partners are easy to use and correlate to state and national standards.
NSDL Middle School Portal for Math and Science Teachers
Created for middle school teachers: A direct path to selective online resources for instruction and professional development from the National Science Digital Library
