NSDL/NSTA Web Seminar: Studying the Human Physiological Limits of Exploring Mars
Archive of the web seminar recorded May 13, 2009. Part of the NSDL Series of NSTA Web Seminars for the 2008-2009 school year in partnership with the American Physiological Society.
NSDL/NSTA Web Seminar: Arctic and Antarctic Birds
Did you know that of the 17 penguin species, only a few live or nest in Antarctica? Or that many of our familiar bird species from the mid-latitudes migrate to breed in polar regions? While we’re all familiar with Emperor penguins, there are many other fascinating birds that call the polar regions home at least part of the year. In this session, develop your own content knowledge and learn how to use birds to promote inquiry, teach physical science concepts, and integrate hands-on science instruction with reading strategies and other literacy skills.
NSDL/NSTA Web Seminar Series
Join us for a series of Web Seminars developed in collaboration with the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) focusing on a variety of science topics and targeting K-12 grade level educators. All web seminars will include information and resources for educators available on the NSDL website. Presenters are well-respected, veteran educators from NSDL and other professional organizations with diverse backgrounds and experience
Media Literacy in the 21st Century: WGBH Teachers' Domain
This web seminar is a part of the NSDL Series for the NSTA Learning Center. The presentation focuses on strategies for educators to use to ensure the use of online resources from reliable and academically sound sources.
Chemistry Comes Alive!: Ice Bomb
From the Chemistry Comes Alive video collection of the NSDL Chemical Education Digital Library (http://chemeddl.org) A cast iron bomb filled with water is placed in a dry-ice/acetone slush and covered with a wooden box. When the water in the bomb freezes, the bomb explodes. This demonstration is dangerous and the required equipment can be difficult to obtain.
JCE Software: Chemistry Comes Alive!
Journal of Chemical Education collection of chemistry videos as a part of the NSDL Chemical Education Digital Library (http://chemeddl.org)
JCE Digital Library: DigiDemos
"DigiDemos" is the Web-based version of the Journal of Chemical Education's Tested Demonstration feature, and part of NSDL.
Vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy of the liquid/vapor interface for dilute HOD in D[sub 2]O
We explore the nature of hydrogen bonding at the interface as well as its impact on the sum-frequency spectrum. It is found that the spectrum is dominated by single-donor molecules with a total of two or three hydrogen bonds.
Water-an enduring mystery : Nature, March 2008
Citing for article by Philip Ball. Fee for accessing full article.
From the abstract: Yet another theory of liquid water structure raises questions about interdisciplinarity, drug design, astrobiology, molecular biology, geochemistry and more.
Thirstin's Water Cycle
EPA site listed in the NSDL Middle School Math and Science Portal:This web site, developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, is divided into four interactive, animated graphic sections: rain, water storage, vapor, and clouds. Students can discover the forms of precipitation and why it occurs, the development of aquifers, transpiration, and condensation. This is a great web site for young students to grasp the connections between different forms of water.
Water Cycle for Middle School Science Teachers Content Knowledge
From the Middle School Math and Science Portal: Background Information for Teachers related to water and the water cycle. Links to resources, activites and standards
Teachers' Domain: Ocean Temperatures and Climate Patterns
From WGBH Teachers' Domain (http://www.teachersdomain.org): Interactions between Earth's atmosphere and oceans drive weather and climate patterns. Although these interactions and patterns are complex, they are also predictable. This animation from The New Media Studio explains precipitation patterns by illustrating how differences in ocean surface temperatures create wind, and how wind patterns can in turn affect ocean surface temperatures.
Solubility Animations from CSERD
Introduction to Chemistry: Shockwave animations related to solubility from CSERD (Computational Science Education Reference Desk http://cserd.nsdl.org)
JCE Software: Periodic Table Live!
Periodic Table Live! allows you to explore a broad range of information about the elements, their reactions, their properties, their structures and their histories.
Activities with Water from ACS
Student activities from the American Chemical Society as a part of the Chem ED digital library
Chemistry Comes Alive III: Water--Seminar archive
Recorded archive of the NSDL Web Seminar, Chemistry Comes Alive III: Water, a part of the NSTA Web Seminar Series for teacher professional development
