The mechanics of the tzolk'in involve 13 numbers paired with 20 day names. Because 20 is not evenly divisible by 13, the two sequences are out of phase with each other (Figure 1.) A day such as 3 Manik' will not recur until all the numbers and names have run through a complete 260-day cycle.
