“...Answering customer needs is the end point of our journeys through the structure and the starting point of our thinking about the journey itself. ”
Designing a website’s structure around customer needs creates trust—trust in the web as a valuable space to interact with a brand, product, or service. Such a website provides your customers with a valuable first point of contact.
User journeys are a method for conceptualising and structuring a website’s content and functionality. These journeys allow us to shift away from thinking about structure in terms of hierarchies or a technical build.
Exploring management consulting firms as knowledge systems Organization Studies - Find Articles
-
This article examines the nature and the generation, dissemination and translation of knowledge in large, global management consulting organizations. The knowledge system in consulting organizations is modelled as consisting of three interacting knowledge elements: methods and tools, providing a common language and knowledge structure; cases, carrying knowledge in a narrative form; and the experience of individual consultants that is essential for the adaptation of methods, tools and cases to the specific consulting project.
A number of recent studies have characterized knowledge-management strategies as focusing on either articulate knowledge or tacit knowledge. We argue that a fruitful understanding of knowledge management in management consulting requires attention to the relations between the different elements that represent different kinds of knowledge. Based on case studies in Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and Ernst & Young Management Consulting (now Cap Gemini Ernst & Young) these knowledge elements and the interplay between them are identified and analysed.
The main role of articulate knowledge is not to replace experience, but rather to support the generation, dissemination and use of it. A number of consequences of this conceptualization of the knowledge system are discussed in tenns of the ability of the knowledge system to generate different types of learning and the complementarity of structural and individual knowledge.
Office UI Licensing
-
Why should I license the Office UI? Microsoft is proud of the results of our massive investment in usability and innovative user interface design for Office 2007. We are offering a licensing opportunity to the broader software community that enables licensees to share the benefits from our research and development in the Office UI.

What is covered under the UI Licensing program? The program provides licensees the rights to make their licensed products look and behave like Office 2007. Licensees will receive design guidelines that they will reference in the creation of their own applications. (The program does not involve code or technical specifications and there are no protocols or file formats either.)

Why is Microsoft creating a licensing program around the Office UI? There has been tremendous interest from our ISV partners to create applications that look and act like our new innovative Office UI. We wanted to create an easy way for them to do that while protecting our large R&D investment. Through this program Microsoft is making available an opportunity for others to take advantage of our stunning new UI in a way that’s good for the ecosystem, the customer, and Microsoft.

How will I license it exactly? You will be able to license the UI via a simple click-through agreement on our website. You will also register your products that use the UI on the same website.

How much does it cost to obtain a license to the Office 2007 UI? The license is provided at no cost. It is a royalty-free license.

Is this only for Windows software products? No. Any software product that complies with the license agreement may implement elements of the UI.

Can any applications use the license? The license is available for applications on any platform, except for applications that compete directly with the five Office applications that currently have the new UI (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access). We wanted to make the IP available broadly to partners because it has benefits to Microsoft and the Office Ecosystem. At the same time, we wanted to preserve the uniqueness of the Office UI for the core Office productivity applications.

The last few years had an almost ridiculous increase of networking tools (social web2.0 software and the likes) and you should really take part and see who you can find in order to get to the point where someone endorses you. LinkedIn is an obvious choice, but also a bit crowded and washed out. O’Reilly’s Connection is an interesting playground and flickr or now even twitter is always fast and fun to get in contact with other people in the same arena.

This is an option to using the gallery module.
IMCE is used to upload the image files. And this module will be used to organize the pictures uploaded into albums that users create. The amount of albums is administerable by the admin. There is also a feature for public/private, to allow users make the album itself be public/private to other users.

Images could be posted individualy to the front page, included in stories or grouped in galleries.
Image Assist
This module allows users to upload and insert inline images into posts. It automatically generates an "add image" link under the textarea fields of your choice. Clicking the link opens an image browsing window, displaying all images that have been uploaded through the image module. Images can be filtered by ownership or taxonomy terms (categories). New images can also be uploaded in the Image Assist window. Clicking on an image displays a properties page where attributes such as caption, size, and alignment can be set before you click Insert to add the image to the post.

FlashVideo
FlashVideo is a complete video solution that expands the upload module to allow web developers and users to upload video files, automatically convert those videos to the popular Flash format, and then embed thier video in any node type in the Drupal System using the simple [video] tag. This project stemmed from my opinion that a video should not be considered a "node", but rather should be treated as a file. Because of this, this module simply expands the Upload module to allow more than one video to be attached to any node, and then referenced through the use of parameters passed to the tag [video]. I have also included automatic conversion to the Flash Format using FFMPEG.

Advertising and conflicts of interest
- Main articles: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Spam
Due to the rising profile of Wikipedia and the amount of extra traffic it can bring a site, there is a great temptation to use Wikipedia to advertise or promote links. This includes both commercial and non-commercial sites. You should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent, even if the guidelines otherwise imply that it should be linked. If the link is to a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included, please consider mentioning it on the talk page and let neutral and independent Wikipedia editors decide whether to add it. This is in line with the conflict of interests guidelines.
A few parties now appear to have a spambot capable of spamming wikis from several different wiki engines, analogous to the submitter scripts for guestbooks and blogs. If you see a bot inserting external links, please consider checking the other language wikis to see if the attack is widespread. If it is, please contact a sysop on the meta-wiki; they can put in a Wikimedia-wide text filter. Sysops should block unauthorised bots on sight.

Google charges for web programs

Dentists could get their own programs via Microsoft's software initiative.
<!-- E IIMA --><!-- S SF -->
Google has introduced a paid-for version of its web applications it hopes will be popular with small firms.
The paid version adds more storage, phone help and guarantees of availability to the Gmail, calendar, word processing and messaging package.
Industry analysts suggest the move is aimed squarely at Microsoft and its Office suite of programs.
At the same time BT and Microsoft signed a deal to create a marketplace of web-based programs for small firms.
<!-- E SF -->
'Brutal timing'
Google's new service costs $50 (£27 or 40 euros) for every account and for this customers get phone support, a guarantee that the online applications will work 99.9% of the time and 10 gigabytes of storage for each e-mail address.
The package of programs available includes e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, calendar and Google Talk.
By paying, users also get the option to turn off the adverts that usually populate the free versions.
The free version of this package was introduced in August 2006 and Google said that more than 100,000 businesses had signed up.
Google hopes that the chance to collaborate on key documents via the web will prove popular to small firms who are more used to e-mailing copies back and forth.
Analysts said the announcement was intended to give people an alternative to Microsoft's Office 2007.
"The timing is just brutal for Microsoft," said Rebecca Wettemann, vice president of research at Nucleus Research. "It's definitely a shot across their bow."
In related news Microsoft has revealed details of a partnership with telecoms firm BT to create a marketplace for a series of business programs designed for small businesses.
The subscription-based marketplace will host all the programs itself and allow small businesses to use the different applications as a service.
As well as generic applications such as payroll programs the marketplace will also host niche applications designed for particular types of small businesses such as dentists and estate agents.
A spokesman for BT said it would be signing up software firms to make the programs soon and that it was aiming to launch by the summer.

File organization strategies: filing versus piling - Lifehacker
-
Macworld breaks down the two main strategies for organizing your digital documents: the organizer/filer approach with more folders, and the searcher/piler approach with smarter searches. Searchers should give Spotlight a little help finding documents by assigning them meaningful file names:
When you save a file, take a moment to think about what words you might use to search for that file later, and then be sure to use those keywords in the file's name.
For example, a file named Steve Jobs Interview will be easier to track down than a file named Interview2. This rule also applies to creating folder names; use a different set of keywords that add context to the files within. This will help you distinguish between similarly named files on your Mac when you search.
My digital organization nirvana is somewhere between filing and piling; for a simple, six-folder structure for organizing your documents directory, check out how to organize "My Documents." How do you keep your home directory in order? Let us know in the comments. — Gina Trapani

Drupal Taxonomy: the power to organize and reorganize
The Drupal Taxonomy module (aka Categories) is one of its most powerful features. Combined with its hooks, Drupal allows administrators to organize and reorganize content easily, giving more flexibility for knowledge sharing in an organization that continuously discovers better ways to share knowledge.
This tutorial has two intentions:
1.In particular: To show content managers and web developers how web content can be organized and reorganized by using Drupal's Categories module.

Now you'll get more glimpses of Drupal's power. Go back to the categories screen (administer > categories) and click list terms for Topic. Each of your terms are still listed and are actually links, too. Mouseover Business and look at the status bar of your browser – it'll show something like http://myserver.com/taxonomy/term/555. (Note that the number 555 will be different in your case.)
The link above tells you that Business is term number 555. And, get this, you can show all stories that have been tagged as Business by just invoking the link “http://myserver.com/taxonomy/term/555”
(using “taxonomy/term/555” will give the same results). Go ahead, try it on your browser. Type that link or just click on Business to see the stories that were tagged under Business. What does this mean? First, without having to reprogram, you can create different ways of displaying content by invoking the taxonomy term numbers. You can create a directory page for your website, similar to Yahoo, simply by creating a story, typing the topics and linking them to the term number. You can even create custom menus using this technique.
IV. Paradigm Shift: From Content to Taxonomy | The Couch Kamote Reviews

Moreover, as more organizations explore knowledge management and transform themselves into learning organizations, it has become clear that the way we structure and categorize information is not static but fluid. One can imagine a grocery list that changes constantly because of the ever-changing needs of a household. Traditional CMS will therefore not be able to respond to the demand for fluid taxonomies; Drupal can. Drupal empowers the users themselves to easily define and change the categories and structures of their intranets and websites. Drupal’s taxonomy module also enables users to create relationships between categories or vocabulary terms without the need for reprogramming. For instance, defining the words “development” and “progress” as synonyms is trivial in Drupal and can be done by non-techie users. In traditional CMS, this task will require reprogramming. The paradigm shift is so difficult that even now, web developers who have made the shift to Drupal cannot clearly articulate why Drupal is better, even to their fellow developers
II. Why a comparative matrix of CMS features will not work. | The Couch Kamote Reviews

I. Why a comparative matrix of CMS features will not work.
<!-- begin content -->
Submitted by benc on Thu, 08/04/2005 - 19:40.
2. A Google search on CMS comparisons will usually lead to several web pages containing a matrix of features with check boxes. If a feature like “Allows blogging” is available to a CMS, the feature gets a check-mark. If not, it gets an X-mark. Simplistically speaking, using a comparative matrix is like comparing laundry soap with dishwashing soap on a limited set of criteria. If our comparative matrix lists features like “Can clean”, “Available in liquid form”, and “Produces bubbles”, our matrix will not be very useful because both detergents contain these properties and we may wrongly decide to use dishwashing soap for our clothes.
3. Similarly, a comparison between Drupal and other traditional CMS is tricky: all of them do well when it comes to content management. Drupal and most traditional CMS are modular in design. This means they allow “pluggable” modules like calendaring, blogging and forums. Both are Open Source, programmed in PHP, using MySQL database, and will run over the Apache web server. These details will not be important to users, so long as they get a good finished product. (See note, below)
