Barcode reader - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Most barcode readers now use a PS/2 or USB cable for output: PS/2 cables are connected to the host computer in a Y formation, the PS/2 keyboard port with its first end, to the keyboard with its second, and to the barcode reader with its third end. The barcode characters are then received by the host computer as if they came from its keyboard decoded and converted to keyboard input within the scanner housing. This makes it easy to interface the bar code reader to any application that is written to accept keyboard input

USB is supported by many newer scanners. In many cases a choice of USB interface types (HID, CDC) are provided. Some have Powered USB."

Sony’s New eBook Software Takes Aim at Kindle

Earlier this week, Sony announced that it will be bringing out a new eBook Reader that will offer built in 3G wireless and the ability to buy books on-demand — just like the Amazon Kindle. Today, Sony has released its eBook Library Software 3.0 for both Windows and Mac users.

The software — which will finally let Mac users interface with Sony’s devices — allows users to browse and purchase books online. This is pretty standard stuff, and apart from Mac compatibility (finally), no different than what Amazon already offers with the Kindle.

The big difference with Sony’s approach is that users can now read eBooks on their Mac or PC. Amazon won’t even let you buy a Kindle book unless you have a Kindle device attached to your account or you have an iPhone or iPod touch set as a registered device. Furthermore, you can only read the books on the portable devices themselves.

Sumatra PDF viewer by Krzysztof Kowalczyk

What is Sumatra PDF?

Sumatra PDF is a slim, free, open-source PDF viewer for Windows.

Why another PDF reader?

Sumatra has a minimalistic design. Simplicity has a higher priority than a lot of features.

It's small and starts up very fast.

It's designed for portable use: it's just one file with no external dependencies so you can easily run it from external USB drive.

Sumatra PDF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sumatra PDF, also known simply as Sumatra, is a free, open source, light-weight PDF reader for Microsoft Windows, written by Krzysztof Kowalczyk.

Sumatra has a minimalistic design, with its simplicity attained at the expense of extensive features. It uses the MuPDF PDF rendering library.
Sumatra was designed for portable use, as it consists of one single file with no external dependencies, making it usable from an external USB drive.[2] This classifies it as a portable application.[1] As is characteristic of many portable applications, Sumatra takes up little disk space.[1] It has a 1.1 MB setup file, compared to Adobe Reader's 44.1 MB, for Windows XP and Vista.[3] Installed size is also 1.1MB, whereas Adobe Reader 9.0.0's installed size is approximately 221 MB.
Sumatra does not lock the PDF file. Without closing the PDF file, a user can recompile the text document and generate a new PDF file and then press the R key to refresh the PDF document.
Printing is achieved in Sumatra by transforming each pdf page into a bitmap image. This results in very large spool files and potentially slow printing on printers with little memory.[4] Sumatra 0.5 and earlier versions can print PDFs that have disallowed printing. This feature has been removed from the newer versions.

4 Really Light Alternatives to Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader and the Portable Document Format (PDF) were a boon to Internet communications when first introduced. Finally, there was a way of sharing documents while preserving the formatting, regardless of the word processor software you used to create it. As time went on and PDF popularity increased, for some reason the Adobe Reader seemed to become bloatware. It went from a download size of 2 MB to as high as 32 MB, with version 9.0.  The installed size of the program is around 133 MB and it can seem to take forever to load. Have you ever clicked on a PDF link just to give yourself time to get some coffee?
Sure, the latest version of Reader has more bells and whistles, but you just want to read the flubsy PDF! Just open it like a web page and read it like a web page. Well, I went a-searching and here are some light alternatives to the hefty Adobe Reader.

Wherever there are gadgets, RSS feed readers are never lacking, and Google Desktop gadgets are no exception. Until now, there hasn't been a good way to combine all your feeds into a single gadget. With the new Google Reader gadget, you can now track your feeds and Google Reader subscriptions directly from your desktop. The Google Reader gadget is designed to be familiar for existing Reader users, yet compact like our other Desktop gadgets

Lifehacker - Google Reader's New Bundles Make Sharing Feeds User Friendly - Google Reader

You might be a master of your feed reader and the nuances of RSS, but what if importing an OPML file is out of your friend's comfort range? Google Reader's Bundle feature makes sharing simple.

Creating a bundle of your feeds to share is as simple as dragging and dropping. When logged into Google Reader click on the "Browse for stuff" link in the left hand navigation panel. On the right hand side of the screen is a column for bundles, click the "Create a bundle" button. From there you'll see the bundle creation tool, as seen in the screenshot above. Scroll through your subscription list, adding feeds with a simple drag and drop.

Google Reader bundles make it easier to share feeds :: Shane Richmond

Has it been more than a year since I wrote about Google Reader? Apparently so. In the meantime, the likes of Twitter have taken much of the momentum away from feed readers, with some people preferring to get their news that way.

I still get a lot of value from feeds and last week Google released an interesting feature for Reader that has the potential to make the service even more useful. It's now possible to create 'bundles' of feeds that can be subscribed to as a single feed or shared with other people. While this is not as powerful as, say Yahoo! Pipes, it still makes it possible to mash-up feeds or simply collate interesting sources.
