Use doPDF To Convert Documents To PDF (Windows)
I guess I got very used to working for the man and the perks that come with it. I have had Adobe Professional on my desktop and laptop for a long time now. When I had to create a quick PDF from a word document on a client’s site - after my laptop suffered from battery drainage I had some issues.
I quickly Googled around looking for a free, easy solution. Lots of places claimed to do what I wanted but the first one that did it EASY and FREE was doPDF.
Sumatra PDF viewer by Krzysztof Kowalczyk
What is Sumatra PDF?
Sumatra PDF is a slim, free, open-source PDF viewer for Windows.
Why another PDF reader?
Sumatra has a minimalistic design. Simplicity has a higher priority than a lot of features.
It's small and starts up very fast.
It's designed for portable use: it's just one file with no external dependencies so you can easily run it from external USB drive.
Sumatra PDF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sumatra PDF, also known simply as Sumatra, is a free, open source, light-weight PDF reader for Microsoft Windows, written by Krzysztof Kowalczyk.
Sumatra has a minimalistic design, with its simplicity attained at the expense of extensive features. It uses the MuPDF PDF rendering library.
Sumatra was designed for portable use, as it consists of one single file with no external dependencies, making it usable from an external USB drive.[2] This classifies it as a portable application.[1] As is characteristic of many portable applications, Sumatra takes up little disk space.[1] It has a 1.1 MB setup file, compared to Adobe Reader's 44.1 MB, for Windows XP and Vista.[3] Installed size is also 1.1MB, whereas Adobe Reader 9.0.0's installed size is approximately 221 MB.
Sumatra does not lock the PDF file. Without closing the PDF file, a user can recompile the text document and generate a new PDF file and then press the R key to refresh the PDF document.
Printing is achieved in Sumatra by transforming each pdf page into a bitmap image. This results in very large spool files and potentially slow printing on printers with little memory.[4] Sumatra 0.5 and earlier versions can print PDFs that have disallowed printing. This feature has been removed from the newer versions.
4 Really Light Alternatives to Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader and the Portable Document Format (PDF) were a boon to Internet communications when first introduced. Finally, there was a way of sharing documents while preserving the formatting, regardless of the word processor software you used to create it. As time went on and PDF popularity increased, for some reason the Adobe Reader seemed to become bloatware. It went from a download size of 2 MB to as high as 32 MB, with version 9.0. The installed size of the program is around 133 MB and it can seem to take forever to load. Have you ever clicked on a PDF link just to give yourself time to get some coffee?
Sure, the latest version of Reader has more bells and whistles, but you just want to read the flubsy PDF! Just open it like a web page and read it like a web page. Well, I went a-searching and here are some light alternatives to the hefty Adobe Reader.
