SocialMedia Uses 'Friend' Endorsement in Ads - MarketingVOX
Palo Alto-based SocialMedia, a company specializing in advertising across social networks, has released a new form of advertising called the "WOMI," or Word of Mouth Impression.
WOMI offers customized ads based on an interactive format, using conversations between friends as an endorsement.
SocialMedia found that messages that came from trusted friends were more meaningful; if the message incorporates an endorsement and opinion about a brand, the impact is higher than a standard message received directly from a brand.
SocialMedia Launches Interactive “Word of Mouth” Social Ads
SocialMedia, a company that specializes in advertising across social networks, has released a new form of advertising dubbed the “WOMI”, or Word of Mouth Impression. WOMI campaigns present visitors with ads asking them for some kind of input either though a multiple choice question or using a text field. SocialMedia then uses this input to customize ads which are shown to the user’s friends on the same social network.
For example, if an ad for Star Wars had a call-to-action asking if I was on the Light Side or Dark Side of the Force, it could take my response and then present my friends with an ad that said “Jason is on the Light Side, how about you?”. In turn, their responses are passed on to all of their friends, making this among the first kind of advertising with a viral element. This interaction makes the ads mini-social applications in and of themselves, and have proven to be very successful in trial campaigns.

It’s undeniably changing the way that content and information work particularly in terms of the publishing of consumer opinion. This has transformed the way that consumers relate to brands and the way that brands should operate, driving direct interaction, transparency and a more consultative approach.
However, we still operate in a system defined by the old media world and consequently big brand involvement is still in the main tentative and sporadic. From my experience of trying to get big brands to embrace the social revolution, there are a number of reasons why they have yet to embrace the real opportunities that involvement can deliver:
