Les enseignants du Québec sont à bout de souffle. Plusieurs se réorientent ou partent en congé de maladie. Voilà ce qu'on retient des grands titres. Mais le malêtre dans le milieu de l'enseignement primaire et secondaire est-il si répandu?
Article on school transitions for parents. From the National Association of School Psychologists
Making the transition to Middle School from the National Education Association.
"A childhood spent in poverty often sets the stage for a lifetime of setbacks. Secure attachments and stable environments, so vitally important to the social and emotional development of young children, are often denied to our neediest kids. These children experience more stress due to loneliness, aggression, isolation, and deviance in their peer relationships, and they are more likely to describe feeling deprived, embarrassed, picked on, or bullied. As a result, they more often face future struggles in marital and other relationships."
"Each student brings a unique set of interests, needs, strengths, and circumstances to school and teachers often struggle to connect with students, especially those facing the greatest challenges. Yet research and common sense tell us that educators positively impact student learning and achievement when they connect their students’ lives outside of school to their learning and the larger school community.
On this episode of the Whole Child Podcast, we heard from two guests who shared strategies for meeting students where they are now, while preparing them for the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead."
Schools seem to be stepping in to fill the role of home. We traveled to Green Bay, Wisconsin where the number of homeless students—504—is at an all-time high.
Can schools do it all: provide basic needs; help for parents find work and homes; and raise academic achievement?
"When your high school junior or senior is on the verge of dropping out, what can you do?
ImageDavid and his wife are struggling with their 17-year-old daughter. Her attitude is, "I don't care about school." She'd rather be hanging out with her friends."
"The Framework Policy on Healthy Eating and Active Living, entitled Going the Healthy Route at School, aims to assist schools as they create an environment that encourages the adoption and maintenance of healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyles. In addition, it encourages students to develop personal competencies related to healthy eating and active living. Within the context of government priorities, the Framework Policy represents a concrete effort that seeks to help people to improve their quality of life through the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits (in French only)."
"Action Plan on Reading in School\n\nAcquisition of the language of instruction is an indicator of educational success, and comprehension of written material is the foundation of learning in all subjects, in both elementary and secondary school. Reading is Essential to Success in School\n\nThe Action Plan on Reading in Shool is intended to improve access to high-quality material, pedagogical and cultural resources and to implement a series of measures to ensure efficiency.\n\nIn recent years, a number of university research projects on the contribution of reading to young peoples's success in school have shown that reading plays an essential role throughout their education and is one of the key factors that contribute to their success. In addition, it has been demonstrated that good reading habits acquired before children begin their formal education help them at every stage of learning, in every subject, and contribute to making lifelong readers. This speaks to the very essence of the Action Plan on Reading in School implemented by the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport in 2005."
"For many years, violence in the schools has been a concern for school staff, parents and the different organizations and institutions that work with schools. Violence is a serious and complex problem that transcends borders, commanding the attention of a number of researchers.\n\nWhatever form it takes, violence in the schools has a negative impact on young people, their academic success and their quality of life at school. Indeed, observations from researchers and testimonies from the field tend to confirm that violence in schools creates an unhealthy atmosphere and breeds mistrust, feelings of not belonging, low self-esteem, anxiety and isolation, and increases absenteeism, academic failures, the number of dropouts, and so on. It is easy to understand why the school community and parents would like to see more action on this issue."

"We must do everything possible to improve the graduation rate, first of all for the young people themselves, whose future depends directly on their education, and also for Québec, which needs its young people in order to meet the social, economic and cultural challenges facing it. Encouraged by the support that has been expressed by civil society, the government intends to pursue this objective. "

"La Déséducation, c'est une websérie signée Mathieu Côté-Desjardins, un jeune enseignant de 26 ans originaire de Rimouski. Mais c'est d'abord un cri d'alarme qui a des allures de coup de gueule. Une longue tirade Web sur la déliquescence d'un système d'éducation qui l'a profondément déçu, choqué, blessé. Ou, comme lui a dit une source au ministère de l'Éducation, un ouragan de force 8 qui promet de déranger partout où il passe."
An overview of 'La déséducation'* in English.

A critical view of the Québec education system rallying together various partners to present their point of view. Not so popular in the English press, very much so in the French press.
"The seven-year graduation rate in 2008-09 is virtually the same as the rate in June 2008 -72.3 per cent. In fact, the overall percentage of Quebec high school graduates has hovered at the same point for several years.
The on-time graduation rate is even less impressive. The overall percentage of students who graduated on time after five years of high school in 2008-09 was 61 per cent, and only 55 per cent at public schools. "
