* discipline & field specific v. world wide
* moderately stratified v. flat
* expertise-driven v. reputation-driven
* individualistic (at least in the humanities) v. collective
* slow (peer review, publication, tenure review) v. Quick (after the fact review in form of trackbacks, etc)
