on social software (28 April 2004, Interconnected)
Social software's purpose is dealing with with groups, or interactions between people. This is as opposed to conventional software like Microsoft Word, which although it may have collaborative features ("track changes") isn't primarily social. (Those features could learn a lot from social software however.) The primary constraint of social software is in the design process: Human factors and group dynamics introduce design difficulties that aren't obvious without considering psychology and human nature
Web 2.0 Honeycomb (Insight-Driven Retailing Blog)
In 2004, Peter Moreville described user experience in terms of seven traits arranged in a honeycomb. In 2007, Gene Smith used the same graphical treatment to describe the traits of social networks (like Facebook, Linkedin, and our own Oracle Mix).\n\nThese ground-breaking diagrams help shape the way software designers think about the user experience.
7 Building Blocks Of The Social Web
Crítica al modelo de Gene Smith\n\nOne aspect that I think is maybe missing from this model is the concept of equity, maybe social equity but that might be redundant. I think potentially reputation may accounts for some of the equity participants build in these social networks, but it doesn't quite cover some of the key motivations in social networks. \n
Social Software Building Blocks / nForm / Customer Insight, Strategy, Design and Development
There are lots of definitions of social software out there, ranging from the clinical ("software that enables people to connect through computer-mediated communication") to the pragmatic ("stuff that gets spammed").
While doing research for a recent workshop, I came across a useful list of seven social software elements. These seven building blocks--identity, presence, relationships, conversations, groups, reputation and sharing--provide a good functional definition for social software. They're also a solid foundation for thinking about how social software works.
Mash-ups + open goverment, troubling or triumphant? - Forum One: User Experience & Design Blog
The New York times released a recent article about a site mashing-up google maps and Prop 8 donors. The result? Public access to names and addresses of people in a handful of states who have financially supported the ban of same-sex marriages in the state of California. The Google API makes the map design recognizable and easy to use.
Impressive
Impressive is a program that displays presentation slides. But unlike OpenOffice.org Impress or other similar applications, it does so with style. Smooth alpha-blended slide transitions are provided for the sake of eye candy, but in addition to this, Impressive offers some unique tools that are really useful for presentations. Read below if you want to know more about these features.
Creating presentations for Impressive is very simple: You just need to export a PDF file from your presentation software. This means that you can create slides in the application of your choice and use Impressive for displaying them. If your application does not support PDF output, you can alternatively use a set of pre-rendered image files – or you use Impressive to make a slideshow with your favorite photos.

SitePoint » Add Semantic Richness To Your Markup With (RDF) Ease
While everyone agrees that semantics are useful, and are becoming more so all the time, few people agree on how to develop and use them. John Allsopp’s recent article on Semantics in HTML 5 pragmatically highlights a number of problems inherent to the limitations of HTML, and the lack of an extensible mechanism for future semantics is chief among them. Another question that John’s article raised relates to the mechanism for encoding semantics on the Web itself.
Recently, a new mechanism for adding semantics to (X)HTML pages called RDF-EASE (short for RDF Extracted Attributes from Styled Elements) has been getting some attention. Although it’s very early yet, RDF-EASE, which can be mixed with CSS, has some intriguing characteristics that may give us a glimpse into the future of semantic Web technologies.
SitePoint » Crimes Against Hypertext
Just like Information Superhighway and cyberspace, the terms hyperlink and hypertext seem to have dropped out of fashion. Despite this, hypertext is still the foundation of the Web — one of its core features. The humble HTML <a> tag is the sole element that produces the hyperlinks that change plain text into hypertext. It still surprises and annoys me when such a central feature of a web page seems to be taken for granted. Poor linking practices are common — editorially and visually — and it has a direct negative impact on usability.
PR on Websites: Press Area Usability
As 3 studies of journalists show, they use the Web as a major research tool, exhibit high search dominance, and are impatient with bloated sites that don't serve their needs or list a PR contact.
Main Page - Social Patterns
The Designing Social Interfaces patterns wiki is a companion site to the book that Christian Crumlish and Erin Malone are currently writing for O'Reilly Media.
We decided to share the patterns as we write the patterns and the book to get community feedback. We think that hearing a variety of opinions about these topics will make the material stronger and more representative of what's happening in social interfaces. As we complete sections of the book, we will be adding the patterns.
If you choose to contribute, we ask that you don't delete sections out right, but rather add your information with attribution. We want to incorporate contributions into the final book material and would like to know who contributed what. Every page has a discussion tab for conversations about the topic.
We look forward to talking with you!
