Brian M. Rafferty, "Pagan 'King' Has Council GOP Nod," Queens Tribune (Sept. 17, 2009)
An article about Dan Halloran, a member of a Neo-Pagan group who is now running for NY City Council from Queens. This was written up in Religion Dispatches (http://j.mp/zYfz8). I saved an archived version of Halloran's website at Iterasi (http://sqrl.it/?spj7w).

This is one of the weirdest news stories I've read in some time. Funny at first, and then more and more disturbing when you think about it.
The AIM FishBot Phenomenon
I just got an IM from "AlmostACoho" with a random question. Turns out this is a bot run by Project Upstream (http://project-upstream.awardspace.com/), which collects AIM screennames and connects them via bots with fish in their names. In other words, you and someone else will each simultaneously get an IM from one of these bots, and then when you respond, your response will be forwarded on to the other party and posted under the name of the bot. So if I had responded to AlmostACoho, some other poor sap on the other end would have received my response, but it would look as if it came from some other kind of coho, trout, or salmon, such as WoolenCoho or BisexualTrout or something. And if they had responded back, I'd have gotten their response posted from AlmostACoho.

Samoa Tourism Tourism against Church in Samoa - eTurboNews.com
News of a peculiar lawsuit in Samoa -- a hotel sued a church because the loud Sunday morning singing was driving hotel guests away. Surprisingly, the hotel won. The church must suspend its open-air services until it can get the noise level below 50 dB. One online comment: "It's not fair to tell the churchgoers they must reduce their spiritual energy. It just doesn't work like that... If you ask someone to reduce the way they praise God, God will reduce your life span or punish you in some way. How dare you take anything away from God, without whom there would be nothing! Especially hotels!"

Lightning Shocks Man Inside His Home (NBC Philadelphia)
This happened not far from where I live. "A Westtown man was literally blown off his feet and knocked unconscious Tuesday morning when lightning hit his neighbor's tree. Rick Russo was inside his own home. So how the heck did that happen?! The current traveled through Russo's cable TV line and he was unlucky enough to be holding his cable box at that exact moment. The shock knocked him off his feet and then knocked him out. 'It threw me across the room and I heard a big bang at the same time and obviously dropped,' Russo told NBC 10's John Blunt. When he came to, he ran to his neighbor's house. She's a cardiac nurse and rushed him to West Chester hospital. He was checked out and sent back home, a little dazed and tired but darn lucky. 'I don't know if I'm lucky or stupid... for holding the cable box,' Russo said." Seen on @SubEWL 's Twitter stream.

Circumcision no longer acid test to identify Indian spies - India - The Times of India
From the article: "In the past, jubilant Pakistani authorities have announced that foreign (read Indian) agents were involved in explosions and attacks in the restive Swat region based on examination of the corpses of the killed attackers. But the 'acid test' cops and officials used to determine whether any of the dead ones was Indian was to check whether the man had been circumcised. If not, they would summarily dub him Hindu and therefore an Indian agent." Turns out this "acid test" is not reliable, as there are Muslim tribesmen from remote areas who do not typically circumcise male children.

Oozing Through Texas Soil, a Team of Amoebas Billions Strong - NYTimes.com
Whoa.
-
Add Sticky NoteA single enormous cell, the amoeba was studied by Dr. Schliwa and colleagues to understand movement from one part of a cell to another, a process that was both easily visualized and carried out extremely rapidly in the big Reticulomyxa, which at its largest could house a billion or more nuclei as it constantly shuttled cell parts and whatnot across its titanic form.
- I can't believe the New York Times used the phrase "cell parts and whatnot" - on 2009-03-24
