59 Bishops Contributed Financially to Maine Bishop's Effort to Oppose Maine Same-Sex "Marriage" Law
Remarkable. I do find it pretty nauseating that they talk about how much they've "suffered" for the cause of "doing battle with same-sex 'marriage' advocates." (Note the quotation marks around "marriage.") I have a hard time mustering up too much sympathy for that kind of "suffering."

Malone said that he was grateful for his fellow Catholic bishops "prayer, encouragement, and financial support" and sharing the suffering that now comes with the territory of doing battle with same-sex "marriage" advocates.

News: Catholic Physicians Wary of Health-Care Reform: NCRegister
The National Catholic Register reports on opposition from the Catholic Medical Association to Democrat-led efforts in the Congress towards reforming health care. You can read the open letter here (PDF via Vuzit) http://j.mp/4lKPxc . CMA's objection goes beyond strictly "life"-related concerns (abortion and end-of-life issues) to oppose the concept of "subsidiarity" from Catholic social teaching to the idea of a nationwide health bureaucracy under government oversight.
"Caritas in veritate" - Encyclical Letter of His Holiness Benedict XVI
An English version of the original. "Profit is useful if it serves as a means towards an end that provides a sense both of how to produce it and how to make good use of it. Once profit becomes the exclusive goal, if it is produced by improper means and without the common good as its ultimate end, it risks destroying wealth and creating poverty."

Austrian Catholic Church holds meeting amid bishops' uproar
Pope Benedict's reinstatement of Bp. Williamson and his elevation of Bp. Wagner, both hardline conservatives who have espoused highly controversial positions, has unleashed a storm of controversy in Austria. From the article: "Austrian Catholicism is in turmoil because Pope Benedict, one week after readmitting arch-traditionalist Bishop Richard Williamson, named an auxiliary bishop in Linz who said Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was God punishing New Orleans for its sins. The two appointments, both apparently without consultation with local churches, sparked doubt about Benedict's leadership and concern the Church was turning increasingly conservative. Schoenborn said the uproar had caused 'irritation and resignation' and the Church needed 'damage control' for the sake of its future, according to the Catholic news agency Kathpress. Four times as many Catholics have officially quit the Church in Linz so far this year as in early 2008, the Austrian Press Agency APA reported, and departures have also been running higher than usual in Vienna, Salzburg, Tyrol and Lower Austria. On Tuesday, 31 of the 39 deans (senior priests) of the Linz diocese passed a declaration of no confidence in Wagner, who has condemned the Harry Potter books as satanic, said homosexuality was curable and ruled out lay participation in Church affairs."

US Conference of Catholic Bishops: statement condemning workplace raids as immigration enforcement tactic (Sept. 10, 2008)
The head of the immigration subcommittee of the US Catholic Bishops conference criticizes the increasing use of large-scale armed workplace raids by the ICE as a tool for immigration enforcement. He doesn't say this explicitly, but due primarily to demographic and economic factors, Catholic churches have often borne the brunt of the massive humanitarian relief costs that arise in the wake of these raids, particularly in caring for abandoned children and other dependent family members (many of whom, not that it should matter, are actually U.S. citizens).
