Deepti Hajela and Jennifer Dobner, "Jewish group wants Mormons to stop proxy baptisms," washingtonpost.com (November 10, 2008)

Via the AP. An advocacy group for Holocaust survivors is mounting a public relations campaign against the inclusion in a LDS genealogical database the names of Jews killed in the Holocaust, presumably for possible later proxy baptism. The inclusion of these names violates an earlier agreement between the group and the church and may have been done without proper authorization.

Declaration: "War Against Exploiters of Lakota Spirituality"

This document, condemning in harsh terms the commercialization and vulgarization of Native American (specifically Lakota) spiritual and religious practices, was apparently first circulated in 1993. Shows a fairly shocking strength of feeling and bitterness.

Lawrence LeShan, "Why We Love War: And what we can do to prevent it anyway," as published in the Utne Reader (Jan./Feb., 2003)

Editor's introduction: "Portraying humans as basically hating war might actually hinder the important work of deterring it, suggests research psychologist Lawrence LeShan. New psychological studies explain what history has long shown to be true—that war holds a deep attraction for large numbers of people in most cultures around the world. In accepting and understanding this hard truth, we may be better equipped to bring peace on earth. A timely new edition of his book The Psychology of War arrived last fall, just as the White House began beating the drums—and much of the American public eagerly fell in line—for a new war." Adapted from LeShan's The Psychology of War: Comprehending its Mystique and Madness, published in spring 2003. Webcite: http://www.webcitation.org/5cARUYfIL

Cindy Jacobs: Prayer Needed for Global Economies

Description of prayers that God will intercede to assist the NYSE and the Fed. Cindy Jacobs says, "We are going to intercede at the site of the statue of the bull on Wall Street to ask God to begin a shift from the bull and bear markets to what we feel will be the 'Lion’s Market,' or God’s control over the economic systems." Seen on Alison Shaffer's Facebook page.

Palin: "I don't know if you'd use the word 'terrorist'" for abortion-clinic bombers

Brian Williams interviews McCain and Palin on the NBC Nightly News, Oct. 23, 2008. There's a lot in this interview, but I'm clipping it mainly because of what it shows about the slipperiness of the term "terrorist" in modern-day political speech. A lot of critics have jumped on Palin for saying that she wasn't "sure" if the word "terrorist" would be appropriate for abortion-clinic bombers. To be fair, the quotation has often been taken out of context. She is pretty clear in condemning such bombings, even if she's uncomfortable with labelling them "terrorism." (However, the deeper point is that she seems to have a special category of violent criminal for whom she considers the word "terrorist" to be appropriate, and apparently Bill Ayers is the only person who fits in that category, as far as I can tell.) Presumably Palin associates the idea of "terrorism" with a kind of anti-American ideology, whatever that might mean, and isn't sure whether abortion-clinic bombers truly fall into that group. Just guessing, though. Discovered via joneilortiz's Friendfeed stream.

US Conference of Catholic Bishops: statement condemning workplace raids as immigration enforcement tactic (Sept. 10, 2008)

The head of the immigration subcommittee of the US Catholic Bishops conference criticizes the increasing use of large-scale armed workplace raids by the ICE as a tool for immigration enforcement. He doesn't say this explicitly, but due primarily to demographic and economic factors, Catholic churches have often borne the brunt of the massive humanitarian relief costs that arise in the wake of these raids, particularly in caring for abandoned children and other dependent family members (many of whom, not that it should matter, are actually U.S. citizens).

Lou Zickar, "As Obama channels Reagan, the real McCain vanishes," Chicago Tribune (Oct. 19, 2008)

A really interesting piece of commentary about the relationship between politics and charisma. The author is a long-time Reagan Republican who's considering a vote for Obama because, to him, he represents the kind of idealism, commitment, and values he saw embodied in Reagan in 1980, whereas McCain, at least in his current political incarnation, represents cynicism, manipulation, and "politics-as-usual."

Li-Young Lee, "The Hour and What Is Dead," from Rose (1986), read by the author | Poets.org

Li-Young Lee is not only an extraordinary poet, but he's a great reader as well. This poem is not my absolute favorite but hearing it read aloud still gets me a little shaky.

"Can the world afford a middle class?"

This is an interesting, straightforward, clear-eyed article, if not as subtle as the title makes it sound. (It doesn't really mean "middle class," it means "people who aren't living at a subsistence level.")
