59 Bishops Contributed Financially to Maine Bishop's Effort to Oppose Maine Same-Sex "Marriage" Law
Remarkable. I do find it pretty nauseating that they talk about how much they've "suffered" for the cause of "doing battle with same-sex 'marriage' advocates." (Note the quotation marks around "marriage.") I have a hard time mustering up too much sympathy for that kind of "suffering."

Malone said that he was grateful for his fellow Catholic bishops "prayer, encouragement, and financial support" and sharing the suffering that now comes with the territory of doing battle with same-sex "marriage" advocates.

Area Man Passionate Defender Of What He Imagines Constitution To Be | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
-
"Our very way of life is under siege," said Mortensen, whose understanding of the Constitution derives not from a close reading of the document but from talk-show pundits, books by television personalities, and the limitless expanse of his own colorful imagination. "It's time for true Americans to stand up and protect the values that make us who we are."
-
"Right there in the preamble, the authors make their priorities clear: 'one nation under God,'" said Mortensen, attributing to the Constitution a line from the Pledge of Allegiance, which itself did not include any reference to a deity until 1954. "Well, there's a reason they put that right at the top."
Breitbart.tv » Planned Parenthood Leader Resigns After Watching Ultrasound of Abortion Procedure
A remarkable story -- the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic evidently undergoes a kind of conversion experience and joins a local anti-abortion organization. In this two-minute interview, she explains her decision in religious terms. Planned Parenthood, fearing the disclosure of confidential information, has initiated some kind of legal action against her, including (I think) a restraining order.
Christian registrar should not be disciplined over same-sex marriage refusal - Telegraph
From the UK: a clerk who refused to solemnize a same-sex marriage is claiming that her refusal to do so -- which she says stems from her religious beliefs -- is protected under freedom-of-conscience laws. She is suing her employer, the Islington Council, for religious discrimination, and she "claims she suffered ridicule and bullying as a result of her stance and said she had been harassed ... by the council."

James Dingemans QC, representing her, told a panel of three appeal judges that
Ms Ladele had never wanted to undermine the human rights or respect due to
members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender communities.
But human rights laws must also be there to protect people with committed
views about marriage, he said. -
'Modern human rights jurisprudence was not intended to obliterate religious
beliefs held for millennia.''
Mr Dingemans said she could not go against her faith and take an active part
to enable same-sex unions. - 1 more annotations...

RELIGION IN AMERICAN HISTORY: In Guns We Trust
A great piece by historian Jon Pahl reflecting on the murder of Meleanie Hain, the Lebanon, PA mother who became a gun rights cause celebre when she open-carried her loaded pistol at her five-year-old's soccer game. (The local sheriff subsequently revoked her permit for showing "poor judgment; a judge reinstated it.) Hain was recently killed in her home by her husband, who was also a gun enthusiast.
Monica Yant Kinney: Firearms the problem, not answer | Philadelphia Inquirer | 10/11/2009
Meleanie Hain, an unusual character (she was a Hare Krishna) who became famous for bringing a loaded pistol to her five-year-old daughter's soccer game about a year ago, was shot and killed by her husband, also a gun enthusiast, in their home last Friday (Oct. 9, 2009). The children reportedly ran from the house shouting, "Daddy shot mommy!" The husband then committed suicide with a shotgun. So much for guns keeping you safe.
Parents given jail terms for relying on prayers to save dying daughter | World news | guardian.co.uk
Sentencing for Dale and Leilani Neumann (of Wisconsin), whose 11-year-old daughter died of diabetes after her parents attempted to treat her using prayer alone. It's a remarkably mile sentence -- one month for each parent for second-degree homicide.

14/09/2007 To whom this may concern
If I come into hospital regarding an overdose or any attempt of my life, I would like for NO life saving treatment to be given. I would appreciate it if you could continue to give medicines to help relieve my discomfort, painkillers, oxygen etc. I would hope these wishes would be carried out without loads of questioning.
Please be assured that I am 100% aware of the consequences of this and the probable outcome of drinking antifreeze, eg death in 95-99% of cases and if I survive then kidney failure, I understand and accept them and will take 100% responsibility for this decision.
I am aware that you may think that because I called the ambulance I therefore want treatment, THIS IS NOT THE CASE! I do however want to be comfortable as nobody wants to die alone and scared and without going into details there are loads of reasons I do not want to die at home which I realise you will not understand and I apologise for this.
Please understand that I definitely don't want any form of ventilation, resuscitation or dialysis. These are my wishes please respect and carry them out.
Yours sincerely
Kerrie Wooltorton
Kerrie Wooltorton's death shows how we have lost respect for life - Telegraph
Another op-ed decrying the Kerrie Wooltorton case.
Coroner Says Doctors Had to Let Kerrie Wooltorton Die
Kerrie Wooltorton of Norwich in eastern England, 26, who was reportedly depressed over her inability to have a child, drank antifreeze on Sept. 18, 2007 and then phoned for an ambulance. When she arrived at the hospital, she presented doctors with a living will in which she refused all but palliative treatment. The hospital (after seeking legal advice) honored the living will and let Wooltorton die. Her family is now suing the hospital, and there is an outcry of opposition to the legal basis for the hospital's decision to honor Wooltorton's wishes. They say she was competent to refuse treatment; critics say a depressed person in the process of committing suicide is by definition not competent to make such a decision.
-
"It is a double-bind for doctors. She was very clear in her wishes. To have forced treatment on her would have been unlawful," hospital spokesman Andrew Stronach said
-
Greater Norfolk Coroner William Armstrong said Monday that the hospital could not be blamed for Wooltorton's death.
"She had capacity to consent to treatment which, it is more likely than not, would have prevented her death," he said. "She refused such treatment in full knowledge of the consequences and died as a result." - 1 more annotations...

Gloucester Lawyer Defends Satirical Glenn Beck Website - Bostonist
This seems a little far-fetched for a possible blog post, but the issue is authenticity. Who owns the name "Glenn Beck"? What counts as satire as opposed to defamation? What sorts of rhetorical gestures are acceptable in what contexts? In other words, if you make the suggestion that Glenn Beck committed a horrible crime, but couch that suggestion in a form of sarcasm easily recognizable to anyone familiar with cyberculture, have you sufficiently protected yourself against the charge of defamation?
