Who Is a Jew? Court Ruling in Britain Raises Question - NYTimes.com

Fascinating article -- a UK court has declared that any definition of Judaism based on descent -- i.e., on whether an individual's mother is Jewish -- is ipso facto discriminatory and thus illegal. The context was an admissions policy for a publicly-funded Jewish school, which had excluded a student applicant because the school's Orthodox policy did not recognize the mother's conversion, conducted in a liberal setting, as valid and thus did not accept the applicant's claim to be Jewish. Book Burning (event announcement for Amazing Grace Baptist Church KJV in North Carolina, Halloween 2009)

They plan to burn, apparently, three classes of items: first, bibles that are not the KJV; second, music that is not Christian; and third, books by "heretics," mainly meaning Christians who espouse theological positions different from those of this church. Archived: http://sqrl.it/?vqeuf

Peter Finn, Joby Warrick and Julie Tate, "How a Detainee Became An Asset: Sept. 11 Plotter Cooperated After Waterboarding," The Washington Post (August 29, 2009)

The argument comes up here that torture provides a religiously legitimate "excuse" for detainees to cooperate with interrogators. In other words, Islamic law permits a person to violate certain other legal obligations while under threat of harm. (This is debatable, though. I discovered this article via Daily Kos, http://j.mp/2pNBNe, where there's a contradictory Islamic legal opinion.) Archived: http://sqrl.it/?840yg and http://www.webcitation.org/5jXqQh8wS

Sue This School | The Big Money (on Trina Thompson, the Monroe College grad who sued because she couldn't find a job)

Interesting perspective on the Trina Thompson vs. Monroe College lawsuit. This one sides with the student -- you don't hear this too often, but he makes a good point, namely, that this is a purely for-profit operation that advertises itself solely on the basis of its ability to secure employment for graduates. Laura Munson, "Those Aren’t Fighting Words, Dear (Modern Love)," The New York Times (July 31, 2009)

From the article: "'I don't love you anymore. I'm not sure I ever did.' His words came at me like a speeding fist, like a sucker punch, yet somehow in that moment I was able to duck. And once I recovered and composed myself, I managed to say, 'I don't buy it.' Because I didn't.'... He'd lost pride in himself. Maybe that's what happens when our egos take a hit in midlife and we realize we're not as young and golden anymore." Archived: http://sqrl.it/?lgavr
