Zazzle merchandise emblazoned with "Pray for Obama - Psalm 109:8"
Here's the Psalm that the inscription refers to: "May his days be few; may another seize his position. May his children be orphans, and his wife a widow." (Ps. 109.8f., NRSV).
Halloween 'devil' claim overstated, says Bishop of Leicester
More on the Leicestershire Halloween controversy. Saving this one for some good quotations.
-
Add Sticky NoteToday, the Reverend Barry Hill, the diocese of Leicester's head of mission, said: "I think Halloween is an unhelpful time, for religious, spiritual and practical reasons. A lot of churches are organising light parties instead. They would prefer to celebrate something that comes from goodness. The problem people have with Halloween is its roots and origins."
- sounds very evangelical in tone, to me - on 2009-11-03
Children 'will go to hell if they celebrate Halloween', says church leaflet - Telegraph
I don't have a good feel for what things are like in the UK, but if this were a US news story -- and I can easily imagine that it would be -- I would think that the subtext was a developing split between evangelicals and traditionalists in this particular community (part of the Church of England, I assume). Some evangelical-leaning activists put together an article condemning Halloween, it gets into the local church newsletter, and traditionalists are more or less blindsided by the controversy that results.

links to witchcraft and ghosts.- Really, now! - on 2009-11-03
Breitbart.tv » Planned Parenthood Leader Resigns After Watching Ultrasound of Abortion Procedure
A remarkable story -- the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic evidently undergoes a kind of conversion experience and joins a local anti-abortion organization. In this two-minute interview, she explains her decision in religious terms. Planned Parenthood, fearing the disclosure of confidential information, has initiated some kind of legal action against her, including (I think) a restraining order.

Kimberly Daniels, "The Danger of Celebrating Halloween: Spiritual Life in God," Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN.com), undated (Oct. 2009?)
There was a press release from Americans United on this (http://j.mp/rC2Dya ). Originally published in Charisma magazine.

During this period demons are assigned against those who participate in the rituals and festivities. These demons are automatically drawn to the fetishes that open doors for them to come into the lives of human beings. For example, most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches.
-
Mother earth is highly celebrated during the fall demonic harvest. Witches praise mother earth by bringing her fruits, nuts and herbs. Demons are loosed during these acts of worship. When nice church folk lay out their pumpkins on the church lawn, fill their baskets with nuts and herbs, and fire up their bonfires, the demons get busy. They have no respect for the church grounds. They respect only the sacrifice and do not care if it comes from believers or non-believers.

"Students Urged To 'Set The Standard' At 3rd Annual BP Journalism Conference," Evangelical News (Oct. 13, 2003)
Originally a press release, credited to Baptist Press News (http://bpnews.net). I clipped this because of the quotation from Barbara Bradley Hagerty, the journalist who recently wrote a story for NPR describing a so-called "bitter rift" between "new" and "old" atheists, with the former meaning Dawkins, Hitchens, et sim. (http://j.mp/4yTNmB). Turns out Hagerty is an evangelical Christian and the story has been decried by atheist bloggers.
Book Burning (event announcement for Amazing Grace Baptist Church KJV in North Carolina, Halloween 2009)
They plan to burn, apparently, three classes of items: first, bibles that are not the KJV; second, music that is not Christian; and third, books by "heretics," mainly meaning Christians who espouse theological positions different from those of this church. Archived: http://sqrl.it/?vqeuf
Parents given jail terms for relying on prayers to save dying daughter | World news | guardian.co.uk
Sentencing for Dale and Leilani Neumann (of Wisconsin), whose 11-year-old daughter died of diabetes after her parents attempted to treat her using prayer alone. It's a remarkably mile sentence -- one month for each parent for second-degree homicide.
'Gay' curriculum challenges students' faith (WorldNetDaily)
WorldNetDaily sounds the alarm over a gay-friendly curriculum unit used by some California public schools. Apparently some of the materials in the curriculum make explicit references to religion. Reporters expose the subversive (and ungrammatical) question, "Does your culture, religion or family have any similar coming-of-age rites of passage (quinceañera, bat/bar mitzvah, prom)?... Do these cultural events encourage gender choice or reinforce gender expectations?" The curriculum also says that "some Native American religions honor individuals who 'embody feminine and masculine qualities' as 'a third gender, beyond man and woman.'" Luckily the Pacific Justice Institute and Focus on the Family will be keeping a close eye on this issue to "investigate whether any opt-out laws are being violated." According to the creators' website, these films are not intended for classroom use but rather for student groups, though they do include some discussion guides aimed at teachers.
"Bible verses banned from Georgia school football field," USATODAY.com (Oct. 2, 2009)
In a north Georgia town, the high school football team used to run through banners at the start of each game inscribed with Bible verses. The superintendent just discontinued this practice after being advised that it was, ahem, illegal.
-
Add Sticky Note"I'm just kind of unnerved about it," said 18-year-old Cassandra Cooksey, a recent graduate who often prayed with her fellow marching band members before football games. "It seems like the majority of people in our community want this and they don't have a problem with it, so I think they should be allowed to have the signs if they want to."
- The only problem with this reasoning being the fact that it's illegal. - on 2009-10-03
