Fascism’s new faces (and new facelessness) in the ‘post-fascist’ epoch
"These people were proud of their work. They were convinced of being engaged in an act of purification. They called Auschwitz the anus of Europe. Europe had to be cleansed. They were responsible for the purification of Europe. If you cannot get your head round that you will understand nothing at all."
Tainted burger leads to stepdad's arrest -- Page 1 -- Times Union - Albany NY:1632:
This is one of the weirdest news stories I've read in some time. Funny at first, and then more and more disturbing when you think about it.
Orlando Sentinel - Parents sue Walmart over kids' bath photos
Walmart called the cops on two parents who submitted photos of their kids for processing, because among the photos were several that showed their kids (ages 18 months, 4 years, and 5 years) taking a bath. The parents are now suing Walmart for not disclosing details of their "unsuitable print" policy. From the article: "[T]he Demarees were not allowed to see their children for several days and didn't regain custody for a month while the state investigated." The state did not file any charges against the parents.
"What Can You Catch in Restrooms?" (from WebMD.com)
Although the subhed on this piece is "Bathroom Paranoia," there really are a lot of freaking nasty germs in bathrooms. More disturbing, though, is the fact that the highest concentration of fecal coliform bacteria in your whole house is probably in the sponge in your kitchen. Second is the kitchen sink.

Goya's black paintings
A collection of images of Goya's so-called "black paintings," which he painted al secco (i.e., fresco) style onto the walls of his private residence between 1820 and 1824 (he died in 1828). It seems likely that he never intended for anyone outside his very private circle (if indeed anyone other than himself) to see them. They're extremely disturbing, dark, surreal, and violent.

It seems likely that he never intended for anyone outside his very private circle (if indeed anyone other than himself) to see them. They're extremely disturbing, dark, surreal, and violent. This site also has extensive resources (including high-quality, watermarked reproductions) for other parts of Goya's oeuvre.

Twitter posts cheering George Tiller's killer
A few examples: "UPDATE... Doctor George Tiller was aborted today in his 204th trimester - aren't paybacks a bitch," (Punch), "oh HAPPY DAY! Tiller the baby killer is DEAD!" (Samantha Pelch), "George Tiller the baby killer was shot dead this morning. God bless the gunmen who hopefully won't be caught" (readnwatchchris, Creedmor. NC), "was George Tiller the baby killers brain scrambled the way he scrambled full term fetuses.. one can only hope" (Brad S), "Infamous baby killer George Tiller gunned down at (irony) church. Why do I not feel sorry for him? Have fun at Judgment Day." (James Fiddler). Via Ayse's Tumblr.

Coatesville: Latest Fire Ruled Arson - News- msnbc.com
Today's update on the string of thirty arsons (one fatality so far) that have taken place over the past six weeks or so in Coatesville, PA, not far from where I live. According to the article, "[t]he mayor has ordered people in Coatesville to remove cardboard, cushions and chairs outside their homes that could catch fire." That gives you an idea of how scared people are. The arsonist or arsonists are beginning to hit neighboring towns as well.
Army Private Subjected to Anti-Semitic Attacks Brutally Beaten By Soldiers
PVT Michael Handman, 20, claims to have been the victim of intense anti-Semitic harrassment (being called "kike" and "fucking Jew," being forced to remove his kippot), and then subsequently being beaten to the point of requiring hospitalization. Mikey Weinstein's Military Religious Freedom Foundation is now looking into the case.
Brigade homeland tours start Oct. 1 - Army News, opinions, editorials, news from Iraq, photos, reports - Army Times
From the Army Times -- the first ever active-unit assignment to the US Army Northern Command. A brigade combat team will be deployed to Georgia (under a command in Colorado Springs) presumably as part of a permanent domestic mission. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this is just ever-so-slightly unnerving.
Scott Jaschik, "New Form of Adjunct Abuse," Inside Higher Ed (Sept. 11, 2008) - San Antonio adjuncts forced to "waive" compensation for full courseload
From the page: "Adjuncts are being encouraged to take on extra courses, as the institution can’t afford to hire as many full timers as it would like. But San Antonio also has rules — providing benefits and higher base pay — to those who teach 12 credits or more. What to do? The college is asking some part timers to take on the extra courses that bring their total to 12 or beyond, but then to agree in writing to pretend that they aren’t teaching 12 credits."

Why would the college ask adjuncts to accept payment for a smaller credit load than they are teaching, and to certify this in a notarized form, if this has nothing to do with denying adjuncts compensation they may have earned? Martin said “that’s a good question.” She then said that Ruben Flores, a college dean who handles adjunct matters (and to whom the waiver forms authorizing pay for fewer credits than adjuncts are working are addressed), would explain the rationale for the system. Flores did not respond to messages.
