Who Is a Jew? Court Ruling in Britain Raises Question - NYTimes.com
Fascinating article -- a UK court has declared that any definition of Judaism based on descent -- i.e., on whether an individual's mother is Jewish -- is ipso facto discriminatory and thus illegal. The context was an admissions policy for a publicly-funded Jewish school, which had excluded a student applicant because the school's Orthodox policy did not recognize the mother's conversion, conducted in a liberal setting, as valid and thus did not accept the applicant's claim to be Jewish. Study Demonstrates How We Support Our False Beliefs - UB NewsCenter
From the article: "Our data shows substantial support for a cognitive theory known as 'motivated reasoning,' which suggests that rather than search rationally for information that either confirms or disconfirms a particular belief, people actually seek out information that confirms what they already believe. In fact, for the most part people completely ignore contrary information... The study demonstrates voters' ability to develop elaborate rationalizations based on faulty information." Shakespeare Had Roses All Wrong : NPR
From the article: "Does treating chairs as masculine and beds as feminine in the grammar make Russian speakers think of chairs as being more like men and beds as more like women in some way?... It turns out that it does. In one study, we asked German and Spanish speakers to describe objects having opposite gender assignment in those two languages. The descriptions they gave differed in a way predicted by grammatical gender."
Religion News: One priest, two faiths, and lots of questions
A profile from Religion News Service of Ann Redding and Thew Forrester, both Anglican clergy who have attracted attention for their involvement in other, non-Christian religious practices (Islam and Zen, respectively).
Can the same person belong to more than one religious tradition? Disputes among Episcopalians
A Beliefnet feature on Ann Holmes-Redding of Seattle (an Episcopal priest who identifies herself as both Christian and Muslim) and Thew Forrester of Michigan (a Bishop-elect who regularly practices Buddhist-style meditation). The controversy over Forrester surprises me.

Sociologist Phil Zuckerman tries to figure out what remains of traditional Christianity in the very secular societies of modern-day Denmark and Sweden. The answer seems to be, "not much," but there is a very strong moral sensibility nevertheless.

Add Sticky Note
How important do you feel it is that a Christian film have people who believe offscreen what their characters are doing onscreen?
Cameron: I think it's very important, particularly for the lead characters who are ultimately going to be ambassadors for your project.

Add Sticky NoteAn example that comes to mind: Chad Allen in End of the Spear. That was just a nightmare situation, for the producers later on to have him on the cover of a magazine as a gay advocate for the homosexual lifestyle. People will see this movie and say, "This is a movie about the gospel and the word of God and your lead guy is a homosexual? Where's the consistency here?" It obviously was just an acting gig for this guy, not something he really believes. And even though it's make-believe, people who have strong convictions, particularly about faith in Christ, they want to know that people are the real deal.
- Specifically on Chad Allen (a gay actor) and his role in End of the Spear (a Christian film) -- Cameron characterizes this as a "nightmare situation." - on 2008-09-26
