Low power embedded software optimization using symbolic algebra

  • ymSoft, that automates the optimization of power-intensive algorithmic
    constructs using symbolic algebra techniques combined with energy
    profiling. SymSoft is used to optimize and tune the algorithmic level
    description of an MPEG Layer III (MP3) audio decoder for the SmartBadge
    (Maguire et al, 1998) portable embedded system. We show that our tool
    lowers the number of instructions and memory accesses and thus lowers
    the system power consumption. The optimized MP3 audio decoder software
    meets real-time constraints on the SmartBadge system with low energy
    consumption. Furthermore, the performance improves by a factor of 7.27
    and the energy consumption decreases by a factor of 4.45 over the
    original executable specification

System-level design techniques for throughput and power optimization

  • his paper presents four techniques that combine low power optimizations (namely dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVS) and dynamic power management (DPM)) with loop transformations (functional pipelining and unrolling) to minimize the power consumption, while satisfying the period and deadline constraints of the application

Memory hierarchy exploration for low power architectures inembedded multimedia applications

  • The effect of the
    data-reuse transformations on power consumption, area and performance of
    multimedia applications realized on embedded cores is examined. As
    demonstrators, widely applicable video processing algorithmic kernels,
    namely the row-column decomposition DCT and its fast implementation
    found in MPEG-X, are used. Experimental results prove that significant
    improvements in power consumption can be achieved without performance
    degradation by the application of data-reuse transformations in
    combination with the use of a custom memory hierarchy
