The TPM DOCUMENT COLLECTION - Collins-Nelson Group Staff Paper Potential Cuts -- $77.9 Billion
LET'S KEEP THEM HONEST! National Science Foundation will be cut 100% in the stimulus package if Senators Collins and Nelson get their way. NSF is the economic engine of the United States of America, financing education, business and government projects that puts people to work throughout the year through grants provided across the nation.
SCIENCE CUTS FROM PAGE 2 ON
- THESE CUTS ARE NOT HELPFUL; WILL UNDERMINE EFFORTS TO KEEP BASIC SAFETY NET OF JOBS CREATION. - n2teaching on 2009-02-06

Add Sticky Note

- Science cuts start on page 2, including a total ZERO out of any job creating funds for the National Science Foundation. Will eliminate grants and other projects that hire and educate people across the nation (United States of America). Also includes grants that collaborate with other countries. - on 2009-02-06
US NSF - Multimedia Gallery - Under the Antarctic Ice--Bald Rockcod
A year after I posted information about the seal-cam being used by researchers to discover what their prey species was, I was notified that the first NSF media report was incorrect, BUT when I went to the original picture, from the original article, Under the Antarctic Ice - Antarctic Toothfish, there was no note of any editing.
Not only was a correction notice NOT listed, I believe that the edited version is incoherent...jumping from the old article to the new without changing paragraphs or even transition sentences. Also, previously listed information about the antarctic siverfish was eliminated without explanation.
This would be an excellent lesson to students and teachers who TRUST that the research provided will be valid. If corrections are made to look like the original with no note of editing, I would not consider that source reliable.
I would recommend that researchers, in the very least conditions, note that there is a correction with appropriate edit dates. It would also be helpful to explain why the Rock CodFish was confused with the Anartic Toothfish. This explanation would be an excellent example of the final steps of the scientific method: to verify results.
I still have the original article here:
Global Challenge Award
Another opportunity for PBL, no matter what you call it. Project Based Learning or Problem Based Learning. The focus is on Earth and global problems and how teams can work together to try to solve them. The focus is on community, around the globe.
There are prizes, BUT all students will receive help in finding the right college for them, collaboration and be eligible to become part of the USA Earth Science Olympiad team. Partially funded by NSF
Explore & Learn [U.S. International Polar Year]
a wide array of scientific literature, activities, lesson plans, images, opportunities, and more are available from NSF and other USA govt agencies who sponsor scientific research of the poles
nsf.gov - Events - Silicon Solar Consortium Kick-Off Meeting - US National Science Foundation (NSF)
The objectives of the meeting include:
- presentation of progress reports for the ongoing SiSoC research projects;
- presentation of white papers, and selection by vote, for the future projects to be funded;
- finalization of the SiSoC bylaws.
