Look, we've got an explanation for the
death of Jesus that says he can't have died for sins of his own, so it
must have been for someone else's. This means these others must have
needed him to die for them. So their sin must have been something more
serious than the Jewish concept of "spot sins" that could be
dealt with by "spot forgiveness" here and there. Otherwise, why
go to the trouble to send a divine savior?

It must have been necessary, so let's posit a condition serious enough to
require it!

How can the Christian be sure everyone needs Christ's atonement? Th is
is what we are asking when we tell the pushy evangelist that his faith is
fine for him, but that we prefer another way. Why do I have to go your
way? The answer, the real, psychological answer, is that "It has to
be the way for everybody without exception. If it's only for some people,
I won't know if I am one of the ones it will work for!"
