  • Given the U.S. Constitution's declared right of religious liberty, should the  government be able to force anyone, including a Catholic diocese or Catholic  school or Catholic Charities agency, to foot the bill for surgical  sterilizations for their employees? Should the federal government force such  organizations to pay for contraceptives that are marketed to prevent pregnancy  but instead can abort tiny children in their earliest stage of development?  Should they have to pay for counseling that violates their beliefs?

Sister Mary Anne Walsh on how the HSS and President Obama are stripping Catholics of their religious freedoms via regulations.

  • Health and Human Services must think Catholics and other religious groups are  fools.

That’s all you can think when you read HHS’s recent announcement  that it may exempt the church from having to pay for contraceptive services,  counseling to use them and sterilizations under the new health reform in certain  circumstances. As planned now, HHS would limit the right of the church not to  pay for such services in limited instances, such as when the employees involved  are teaching religion and in cases where the people served are primarily  Catholic.
  • With its new regulation, HHS seeks to force church institutions to buy  contraceptives, including drugs that can disrupt an existing pregnancy, through  insurance they offer their own employees. This is part of HHS’s anticipated list  of preventive services for women that private insurance programs must provide  under the new health reform law.

I'm dumbfounded how in this time of deep economic distress we can do this. Where does personal responsibility fit into life in America?

  • There's no Obama bill.  There's nothing set down on  paper.  So the Reid bill will become the Obama bill.  The Boehner plan  will become the Obama plan.  I think that's the trap.  And, of course,  the establishment, Republicans are all gung ho.  "Gotta get this  done.  It's the best we can get."  Because they're telling themselves  there aren't any tax increases in it, and there aren't.  There aren't any  tax increases in the Boehner bill.  And there are spending cuts and there  are caps, but what happens when that goes over to the Senate and Reid says, "You  know what, I like some of this and I don't like that. Let's take some of this  out and put some of this in," and gets his votes for it and the Boehner bill  becomes something unrecognizable, then goes back to the House, what are they  going to do?  They've already passed the Boehner bill under the guise that  we can't wait any longer, that AAA credit rating is in jeopardy, all this rotgut  BS.

So that, essentially, is where things stand. Now, back to this  Daily Caller story. The one thing in the Boehner bill, and Democrats don't like  this, is that the debt ceiling doesn't get raised enough to get us through the  2012 election. In other words, the Boehner bill is not a full-fledged Obama  Re-election Lifeline Bill. But that's what Reid wants to turn it into. Now  they're attacking that aspect of the Boehner bill by saying that the Republicans  want to destroy Christmas. "House Speaker and national grinch John Boehner is  planing [sic] to spoil Christmas, White House officials are claiming, as they  try to head off passage of Boehner's two-stage debt ceiling bill.

  • Historically we have practiced medicine by geography--where a disease occurs in  the body. That doesn't make scientific sense anymore. Now we have the potential  to treat illness by understanding the underlying mechanisms and metabolic  pathways.

  • A study  in Family Medicine reported the disturbing data that, on average, a patient  was able to speak uninterrupted for only 12 seconds! On the other hand, Dr.  Sanders noted that the average patient will get their story out in two minutes.  Doctors do not listen and it interferes with the quality of care and the ability  to make a diagnosis. Most of the time, if we take the time to listen, you are  telling us what we need to do to help you. Even worse, after the visit was over,  patients and doctors couldn't agree on the purpose of the visit. No one was  listening!

  • You can't manage your doctor's practice, but here are some things you can do  to manage your time.

    • Find out when the doctor starts and get the first appointment of the  morning or afternoon
    • Call 30 minutes before your appointment and find out  if the doctor is running on time. If not ask if it is OK if you come later?
    •  Always bring work or a book, as the magazines in the office are outdated and at  least you will be productive
    • If your doctor is chronically late, find  another doctor.
