John Cassidy on ObamaCare - WSJ.com

Ever wonder why the government is willing to proceed with even further big government spending during a recession?

It's all about the power. Make an entitlement, make us all dependent on it, and watch the Democrats keep power for the rest of the century.

  • The typical argument for ObamaCare is that it will offer better medical care for everyone and cost less to do it, but occasionally a supporter lets the mask slip and reveals the real political motivation. So let's give credit to John Cassidy, part of the left-wing stable at the New Yorker, who wrote last week on its Web site that "it's important to be clear about what the reform amounts to."
  • Why are they doing it? Because, according to Mr. Cassidy, ObamaCare serves the twin goals of "making the United States a more equitable country" and furthering the Democrats' "political calculus." In other words, the purpose is to further redistribute income by putting health care further under government control, and in the process making the middle class more dependent on government. As the party of government, Democrats will benefit over the long run.

Republican Leader John Boehner | Speaker Pelosi’s Government-Run Health Plan Will Require a Monthly Abortion Premium

The current health care bill in the house does require public money for elective abortion. Here are the links!

abortion current events areyousorryyet?

  • Health care reform should not be used as an opportunity to use federal
funds to pay for elective abortions. Health reform should be an
opportunity to protect human life - not end it.

    Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page government
    takeover of health care
does just that.  On line 17, p. 110, section 222 under “Abortions for which Public Funding is
Allowed” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to
determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan.
The Speaker’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered
    in the Exchange covers abortions.

What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be
charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan.  It’s right
there on line 16, page 96, section 213, under “Insurance Rating Rules.”  The
premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal
funds will be used to pay for the abortion services
    .

Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits
Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay
for elective abortions under the government-run plan.  The
Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.

  • While White House spokesman Robert Gibbs today refrained from telling reporters whether President Obama in his speech Wednesday night will set a deadline for passing health care reform, sources tell ABC News that in his private meeting with Democratic congressional leaders this afternoon the key word was urgency.

The president told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that it is important for them to pass health care reform bills soon, the sources said.

Both leaders told the president that despite the difficult rough and tumble of the legislative process in the last few weeks, they are optimistic that both the House and Senate can pass health care reform legislation.

White House projects bigger deficits, bigger debt - Yahoo! News

If you voted for Obama is this really the hope and change you were looking for? Really??

  • WASHINGTON – The federal government faces exploding deficits and mounting debt over the next decade, White House officials predicted Tuesday in a fiscal assessment far bleaker than what the Obama administration had estimated just a few months ago.

Figures released by the White House budget office foresee a cumulative $9 trillion deficit from 2010-2019, $2 trillion more than the administration estimated in May. Moreover, the figures show the public debt doubling by 2019 and reaching three-quarters the size of the entire national economy.

  • The deeper red ink and the gloomy unemployment forecast present President Barack Obama with an enormous challenge. The new numbers come as he prods Congress to enact a major overhaul of the health care system — one that could cost $1 trillion or more over 10 years. Obama has said he doesn't want the measure to add to the deficit, but lawmakers have been unable to agree on revenues that cover the cost.

UPDATED: Obama's VA pulls so-called 'Death Book' from website | Washington Examiner

Universal care is going to be rationed care. One of the rations is going to be forcing folks more quickly towards death. Here is one of the examples of that already happening in a form of socialized health care through the military. Wonder if the same thing happens in congressional health care? For example do you think Ted Kennedy received a pamphlet like that? I'm thinking probably not.

  • Jim Towey wrote last week in the Wall Street Journal that Obama's Veterans' Affairs department had revived a controversial and previously discontinued 53-page pamphlet on end-of-life issues for wounded soldiers. The debate over what Towey calls the "Death Book" bodes so poorly for the president's position in the health care debate that, after two segments on Fox News discussing the pamphlet this morning, the Department of Veterans' Affairs has apparently pulled the booklet from one part of its website where it had been linked by several bloggers. (UPDATE: The document still exists in another spot on the site, as NRO's Jonah Goldberg informs me.)
  • We were supposed to be beyond any debate over "death panels" when it comes to health care reform. But now the administration is scrambling to explain whether and why it has been referring physicians to use a document for end-of-life planning that strongly hints at the worthlessness of life when its quality is diminished by even relatively minor injuries and health problems, such as being wheelchair-bound.

  • WASHINGTON – Health care legislation before Congress would allow a new government-sponsored insurance plan to cover abortions, a decision that would affect millions of women and recast federal policy on the divisive issue.

  • Federal funds for abortions are now restricted to cases involving rape, incest or danger to the health of the mother. Abortion opponents say those restrictions should carry over to any health insurance sold through a new marketplace envisioned under the legislation, an exchange where people would choose private coverage or the public plan.

Jobless Claims Rise

  • Employers
in the United States have cut 6.5 million jobs since the recession
began in December of 2007 and the country's unemployment rate recently
    hit a 26-year-high of 9.5 percent.

    White House Budget Director
Peter Orszag said Wednesday officials expect the unemployment rate "to
remain stubbornly high" even when the economy improves. And Federal
Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers Wednesday the country's
rising unemployment rate remains the biggest threat to the economy.

  • Every month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes six “measures of labor underutilization” (i.e. unemployment). The official unemployment rate used by politicians and the media, referred to as U3, measures the percent of the civilian labor force that is out of work. (http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/print.pl/lau/stalt.htm)

But U3 does not include so-called “discouraged workers” who have completely stopped looking for jobs, “marginally attached” workers who had not searched for a job within the past month, or those involuntarily employed part-time instead of full time. U6 includes every willing worker who wants, but is not able to secure a full time position, so a state’s U6 rate is obviously higher than its U3.
  • puts the nation’s true unemployment rate even higher - close to 20 percent – which is well above the U6 and into Great Depression territory, when nearly one out of five workers found themselves unemployed.

  • I have talked face to face with the godless communist leaders. It may surprise you to learn that I was host to Mr. Kruschev for a half day when he visited the United States, not that I'm proud of it. I opposed his coming then, and I still feel it was a mistake to welcome this atheistic murderer as a state visitor. But, according to President Eisenhower, Kruschev had expressed a desire to learn something of American Agriculture - and after seeing Russian agriculture I can understand why. As we talked face to face, he indicated that my grandchildren would live under communism. After assuring him that I expected to do all in my power to assure that his and all other grandchildren will live under freedom he arrogantly declared in substance:

" 'You Americans are so gullible. No, you won't accept communism outright, but we'll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you'll finally wake up and find you already have communism. We won't have to fight you. We'll so weaken your economy until you'll fall like overripe fruit into our hands.'

"And they're ahead of schedule in their devilish scheme."

  • These ideas (among many other equally horrifying recommendations) were put forth by John Holdren, whom Barack Obama has recently appointed Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, and Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology -- informally known as the United States' Science Czar. In a book Holdren co-authored in 1977, the man now firmly in control of science policy in this country wrote that:
  • • Women could be forced to abort their pregnancies, whether they wanted to or not;

    • The population at large could be sterilized by infertility drugs intentionally put into the nation's drinking water or in food;

    • Single mothers and teen mothers should have their babies seized from them against their will and given away to other couples to raise;

    • People who "contribute to social deterioration" (i.e. undesirables) "can be required by law to exercise reproductive responsibility" -- in other words, be compelled to have abortions or be sterilized.

    • A transnational "Planetary Regime" should assume control of the global economy and also dictate the most intimate details of Americans' lives -- using an armed international police force.

  • President Obama's Science Czar, John Holdren, took a controversial and amoral approach to the science of population by recommending mass compulsory sterilization and even forced abortion (and/or forced marriages) under certain circumstances. His 1977 tome, Ecoscience, which he co-authored with Paul and Anne Ehrlich, also displays a revealing disregard for the institution of the traditional human family.
  • As United States taxpayers know, income tax laws have long implicitly encouraged marriage and childbearing...Such a pronatalist bias of course is no longer appropriate. In countries that are affluent enough for the majority of citizens to pay taxes, tax laws could be adjusted to favor (instead of penalize) single people, working wives, and small families. Other tax measures might also include high marriage fees, taxes on luxury baby goods and toys, and removal of family allowances where they exist. Other possibilities include the limitation of maternal or educational benefits to two children per family.

  • The $787 billion stimulus plan is turning out to be far less stimulating than its architects expected.
  • Back in early January, when Barack Obama was still President-elect, two of his chief economic advisers — leading proponents of a stimulus bill — predicted that the passage of a large economic-aid package would boost the economy and keep the unemployment rate below 8%. It hasn't quite worked out that way. Last month, the jobless rate in the U.S. hit 9.5%, the highest level it has reached since 1983.

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminary estimate for job losses for June is 467,000, which means 7.2 million people have lost their jobs since the start of the recession. The cumulative job losses over the last six months have been greater than for any other half year period since World War II, including the military demobilization after the war. The job losses are also now equal to the net job gains over the previous nine years, making this the only recession since the Great Depression to wipe out all job growth from the previous expansion.
  • - The prospects for job creation are equally distressing. The likelihood is that when economic activity picks up, employers will first choose to increase hours for existing workers and bring part-time workers back to full time. Many unemployed workers looking for jobs once the recovery begins will discover that jobs as good as the ones they lost are almost impossible to find because many layoffs have been permanent. Instead of shrinking operations, companies have shut down whole business units or made sweeping structural changes in the way they conduct business. General Motors and Chrysler, closed hundreds of dealerships and reduced brands. Citigroup and Bank of America cut tens of thousands of positions and exited many parts of the world of finance.

Job losses may last well into 2010 to hit an unemployment peak close to 11%. That unemployment rate may be sustained for an extended period.

  • The federal picture is so bleak because the Obama
administration is the most fiscally irresponsible in the history
of the U.S. I would imagine that he would be the intergalactic
champion as well, if we could gather the data on deficits on
other worlds. Obama has taken George W. Bush’s inattention to
deficits and elevated it to an art form.
  • The Obama administration has no shame, and is willing to
abandon reason altogether to achieve its short-term political
goals. Ronald Reagan ran up big deficits in part because he
believed that his tax cuts would produce economic growth, and
ultimately pay for themselves. He may well have been excessively
optimistic about the merits of tax cuts, but at least he had a
    story.

Obama has no story. Nobody believes that his unprecedented
expansion of the welfare state will lead to enough economic
growth. Nobody believes that it will pay for itself. Everyone
understands that higher spending today begets higher spending
tomorrow. That means that his economic strategy simply doesn’t
    add up.
