CRITICAL!! Opening Documents Prompts for User Name and Password - Outlook by the sound

  • If this is the case, then I don't think it's about zones at all, and I also think your question also contains the answer... The fact that the users are not on the same domain and as a result have to enter credentials everytime they connect is exactly why this is happening.

Just think about it - users connect to the portal site with their browser, and it is their browser that handles authentication. They then try to open a document in a different application - and there is no way for IE to pass on security context to that other application, it just does not work that way. So the application has to authenticate with the server once again.

All the zones configuration in IE only makes sense when users are on the same domain and can make advantage of the 'Automatic logon with current username and password' feature. In your case it won't help. What may help is forcing your clients to open the documents in the browser, rather than the respective Office application (but apparently you'll lose most of the integration features).
