Chaks' Corner | Using KeywordQuery to search in your SharePoint site

There are various ways that you can query the Search Service in your SharePoint site:

1) Using the Search Web Service

2) Using the SharePoint Object Model

There are yet again two ways you can use the Search, using the Object Model:

i) KeywordQuery

ii) FullTextSqlQuery

I think it is a good option to use Object Model when you want to customize the Search (mostly in your WCM websites), and KeywordQuery comes in very handy!

Using KeywordQuery to search is pretty simple! (provided you have set up your Search properly)

Case Study of High Availability for SharePoint Server by Using Virtualized Environments and Database Mirroring

This paper highlights the lessons learned from a proof of concept configuration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 across two data centers that included database mirroring. The environment runs on Hyper-V, hosted on the 64-bit edition of the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise operating system with Service Pack 1. The mirroring solution that this paper describes is based on the architecture that is described in the following white paper: Using Database Mirroring with Office SharePoint Server and Windows SharePoint Services (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83725).

You can download this paper to read and print in the following formats:

Re-using SharePoint controls - Robin | zevenseas | SharePoint Blog

This post is going to be a summary of some of some the SharePoint controls I regularly use in my solutions. Cool thing about re-using the controls that are already out there is, that saves time in re-inventing the wheel and you don’t have to worry about keeping the look&feel consistent ;)

Use Windows Azure as your SharePoint Records Center

Microsoft SharePoint contains functionality for Records Management, which essentially is a storage for documents that you would like to store and manage in a separate records center to meet certain legal or other requirements or just to make backups of certain document revisions. To be able to create a Records Center you need to have Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS). On the other hand you only need Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) to send documents to the Records Center.

You configure the Records Center connection in the Central Administration. When connecting to the Records Center all you do is specify a Url to a web service and a name. The Url points to a special MOSS web service called OfficialFile.asmx (http://server/_vti_bin/OfficialFile.asmx). Your receiving Records Center server does not have to be in the same farm as from where you send the document (and it should probably not be either). Another thing is that the receiving Records Center does not even have to be a SharePoint server. It's just a web service and we can implement it anywhere we like.

I thought why not implement it using the Windows Azure technologies? This would be a great solution when you do not want to invest in either MOSS or a new MOSS farm, when you really want your important documents to be stored on a completely different physical location etc.

Using Analysis Services data in Excel Services part 1 - Preparing the AD for Kerberos - Ton Stegeman [MVP] weblog - SharePoint Blogs / SharePoint University

I started to work with Excel Services in combination with data from Analysis Services. First I configured this all in 1 virtual machine, which was easy, because it just works. The next step was to get it working in a real world scenario at one of our customers. Here we have a SharePoint server which also runs Excel Services. Databases and the Analysis Services cubes are on a different machine. The requirement is that we need to impersonate the user to Analysis Services. To be able to do this you have to implement delegation of user account using Kerberos authentication (or SSO). NTLM is not enough, because the web server cannot delegate the current user to the SQL Server. This is also known as the double hop.
In this small series I will descibe all steps that I took to get it working in a virtual test environment. First I will describe the setup of my environment and after that I will describe the changes to the Active Directory.
