This online community is part of the Australian ePortfolio Project which is examining the current levels of ePortfolio practice in Australian higher education. The focus of this ePortfolio community of practice is to enable participants ‘to share knowledge outside of the traditional structural boundaries’ and to work around the potential problems of slow-moving hierarchies in organisations (Lesser & Storck, 2001).

In 2008 the JISC / Higher Education Academy Collaboration Initiative provided funding for JISC TechDis to work with partners in the JISC RSCs and Higher Education Academy Subject Centres to develop a suite of learning objects on inclusive use of technology in teaching that were tailored to, and therefore more useful for, a variety of discipline or role areas.

The overarching aim of the Australian ePortfolio Project was to examine the current levels of ePortfolio practice in Australian higher education. The research findings revealed that there was a high level of interest in the use of ePortfolios in the context of higher education, particularly in terms of the potential to help students become reflective learners who are conscious of their personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, as well as to make their existing and developing skills more explicit.
