Visual Definitions of Web 2.0
This slideshow is a colllection of maps, models, and visualizations from a range of sources and places on the web aimed at helping to understand the components that make up Web 2.0 as well as how they fit together. It has been created and assembled by the good folk at www.EdVibes.com. As with all things Web 2.0 however at least one of the maps, that from informationarchitects has already been updated.
Worldmapper: The world as you've never seen it before
Worldmapper is a collection of some 600 world maps, that uses cartograms to offer comparative data around themes such Age of Death, Income etc. Each of the the countries are re-sized on each map according to the particular variable that is being mapped. Though some of the maps are quite tricky to work with at first after you get used to it, the cartograms are a great visualization. Each of the maps also has an associated pdf file.
CO2 emissions, birth & death rates by country, simulated real-time
Breathing Earth is a real-time simulation that purports to display the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, alongside birth and death data. The simulation tracks on a map where in the world these vents are likley to be taking place. Really interesting stuff.
"Please remember that this real time simulation is just that: a simulation. Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high. "
Maps of War ::: Visual History of War, Religion, and Government
These fascinating Flash based maps trace the history of events and trends such as the march of democracy, and the Imperial History of the Middle East. The maps play in a flash player that can also be embedded in a blog or wiki. Another great tool for use with an IWB.
David Rumsey Historical Map Collection
"The David Rumsey Collection was started nearly 20 years ago, and focuses primarily on cartography of the Americas from the 18th and 19th centuries, but also has maps of the World, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies, books, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps, including pocket, wall, children's and manuscript. "
"Now over 100 new maps added to the Rumsey Historical Maps in Google Earth and to a new layer in Google Maps."
