Climate Change - News - Environment (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

This is a great interactive from the ABC that tracks back through history to look at a range of factors that may or may not play a part in climate change including human population, industrial landmarks and geological changes. As well as looking backward through time it also offers 4 scenarios for the future none of which are terribly optimistic.

Maureen Tumenas's videos on Vimeo

Maureen Tumenas is assembling an ever expanding collection of movies of er class and others working especially with science. These are great examples of how video can be used on a number of levels. The videos are a great reminder for the students in Maureen's class, they enable parents to be involved in what is happening in the classroom, they can be used as a stimulus for other students and teachers can review them as a means of professional learning.

Vanishing Styrofoam at Steve Spangler Science

You won't believe your eyes when you see what happens to ordinary packing peanuts when they come in contact with a solvent called acetone. They seem to just "disappear" like magic. In fact, the Styrofoam reacts with the solvent to reveal the fact that Styrofoam is made up of long strands of styrene molecules with lots of air pockets. This demonstration also reminds us about the importance of reducing our use of Styrofoam and replacing it with more Earth-friendly packing materials.

CO2 emissions, birth & death rates by country, simulated real-time

Breathing Earth is a real-time simulation that purports to display the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, alongside birth and death data. The simulation tracks on a map where in the world these vents are likley to be taking place. Really interesting stuff.

"Please remember that this real time simulation is just that: a simulation. Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high. "

Why is science important? - A collection of thoughts from leading scientists, public figures, ...and you.

This blog and embedded videos are an attempt by teacher Alom Shaha to answer the perrenial question from students as to why learn science. As Alom says,

"I want this project to reach people who don’t think science is important and convince them otherwise. I want it to demonstrate that science is absolutely crucial to the future wellbeing of our world, that its contribution to culture is as significant as that of music, art or literature and, most important of all, that a sound appreciation of science is vital to realising your potential as a human being. I want this project to make it far, far easier for any science teacher to be able to answer that inevitable question, ‘what’s the point of all this?”
