  • Traditional mathematics focuses on teaching algorithms that will lead to the correct answer. Because of this focus on application of algorithms, the traditional math student must always use the specific method that is being taught. This kind of algorithmic dependence is de-emphasized in reform mathematics.[5] Reformers do not oppose correct answers, but prefer to focus students' attention on the process leading to the answer, rather than the answer itself. The presence of occasional errors is deemed less important than the overall thought process. Research has shown that children make fewer mistakes with calculations and remember algorithms longer when they understand the concepts underlying the methods they use. In general, children in reform classes perform at least as well as children in traditional classes on tests of calculation skill, and considerably better on tests of problem solving.[6][7][8][9]

Hi Courtney,

To limit the domain or range (x or y values of a graph), you can use piecewise functions with the following syntax:

y={condition1:formula1,condition2:formula2,etc.}

For example, to graph y>(x^2) for 0<x<2 you'd type in:

y={0<x<2:x^2}

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions, and make sure to follow us on twitter @desmosinc for all of our latest updates.

  • 6. Parse Personal Data

    Got some spare time on your hands now that school is out? Why not take a closer look at how your habits and routines change, or stay the same, during the summer. First, read about what the Wolfram Alpha creator Stephen Wolfram learned about himself by analyzing 23 years of e-mails. Then conduct your own personal data collection experiment.

    Choose some quantities to record like the time you wake up or go to sleep, how much time you spend with digital media, how many text messages or e-mails you send and receive, how you spend time on Facebook or other interesting quantities.

    Collect the data and then analyze and represent the results, maybe by making your own infographic. Are your sleep patterns more or less consistent in the summer? Do you spend more or less time on the Web? Find a way to tell your story with your personal data.

    Acquaint yourself with how companies like Target and Facebook are using the data they collect about you and what students think about it. How much do you think your personal data is worth? How much is it worth to specific companies like Facebook?

  • In less than three years, the Common Core State Standards have vaulted over three key hurdles, surprising more than a few naysayers. In June 2009, governors and education chiefs in 46 states pledged their support for the idea. A year later, panels of experts unveiled the completed standards. By last November, all but four states had formally adopted them.

    Now, the standards face what experts say is their biggest challenge yet: faithful translation from expectations on paper to instruction in classrooms.

    The implementation stage brims with possibilities both promising and threatening, depending on one's perspective.

    To some critics, the standards carry the specter of lock-step curriculum imposed by outsiders. To others, they represent a step down from some states' top-notch standards, or an overemphasis on skills at the expense of content. The standards' most ardent backers see them as a brilliant distillation of what students urgently need to master to thrive in college and work, and as a door-opener to better teaching.

    Whether opponents' nightmares come true, or advocates' hopes are borne out, will depend largely on how the standards are put into practice.

  • Math teachers face having to teach skills to which they're unaccustomed, since some concepts have been moved to lower grades in the new standards. They're also being asked to focus longer and more deeply on fewer concepts and to emphasize conceptual understanding and practical applications of math. In many places, such as Howard County, Md., that has resulted in a flurry of activity as teachers brainstorm about how to design curriculum and pedagogy that embody the standards.
